    The Stockpiler: someone with a wide assortment of supplies but very little knowledge of how to actually do anything.
    The MacGyver: someone who can jury rig anything with duct tape, a pencil, and a pack of chewing gum.
    The Survivalist: someone who can find dinner in an old stump and keep warm using a roll of toilet paper and a rusty coffee can.
    This was an interesting article linked from survival blog. Unfortunately, I more of a stockpiler. But at least my son is the MacGyver type.

    Interesting observation and probably right on target.

      How about a MacGyver survivalist. Although I'm not sure about the rusty coffe can part.

        Rather a limited selection from which to choose...I prefer to maintain a balance between the three, having supplies, the knowledge and tools to use them, and the ingenuity to adapt for unforeseen circumstances.

          If we could get something like 50% of households to simply be stockpilers, we could perhaps have a more gentle glide slope if the SHTF. Fewer panicked people, time without starvation, etc. Might allow those with skills and mental preps to help them organize and avert wipeout.

          That is why I think goofy shows like Doomsday Prepper may do some actual good. If all my neighbors (by which I mean in a 5 mile radius, say) had plenty of food storage, we'd all be better off, even without them having many skills.

          At the other end of the spectrum is the guy with skills (combat, or worse violent crime) with no preps except weapons. I have to count on that guy's morals from the moment the SHTF. And I can't count too high these days.

              I was shooting with some buddies one day and they had one of their buddies there. We were discussing the "if" word....he said, with his AR and 1000+ rounds and 10 mags he will just take what he wants and live like a king.
              I said "what was the name of that king that acted like that and was taken out fast?"

              He said, " Who will stop me?" Uhhh dude, the armed group of folks that you are going to try and "conquer"....I bet him 100 buckets of rice he wouldn't last a week. And told him if he wanted to come collect that rice, I would have a new AR minus some ammo.


              I am a grasshoppah....learning from the sensei daily. I hate to be categorized into in category.....I am just here, learning and churning.

                    Ditto what Matt said.

                    Although realistically, half of those "types" have never been in a serious fist fight, let alone having high speed projectiles coming towards them.

                    One day, a lot of "would be takers" will have a helluva wake up call as their loved ones try without success to treat their hemothorax. I'm guessing THEN the realization will come that it would have been slightly easier to stock some food.

                    The REALITY of the situation for those types that they have not fathomed is that they will have to fight for basically EVERY MEAL THEY EAT.

                    And that's just plain stupid... and a recipe for a shorter life span. No one is that good.

                      I imagine I'm between stockpiler and MacGyver. I think we've got enough toilet paper to keep both of us warm to well below freezing.

                        I think a mix of the three is probably your best approach.
                        Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"
