They install a small wind generator. I did not see a charge controller or a dump load. From what I saw they just connected it to the batteries. I have no experience with wind gennys but I have never seen one just connected directly to the battery bank.
Also even though the pole the genny sits on isn't very tall it still looked to me like it needed guy-wires to keep it up. Seems to me even a pretty stiff breeze would have that pole bent over real quick and then it would be useless.
I would think the alternative energy guy he talked to at the beginning of the episode would have explained this to him. Maybe I am missing a few things.
