Well said if you ask me. I ran into a couple that you just described at the local dicks sporting good store. They were in the process of buying all the things that are going to be needed for their BOB. I overheard them in the canoes saying yeah we could carry one of these. So in I went and started talking about canoes and then on. Found out that they want to get some supplies handy if they ever had to leave Dodge. I asked what they had already and how many they were preparing for. Just the two of them. They had new BO clothing, a 6man tent (it was on sale), 2 cases of water, a colman white gas stove. 4 days of the mountain house food they sell there and they were looking at the canoe. I asked how about a good knife(Nope) what about a way to start a fire(Nope) what about good shoes to walk in for a hundred miles(Nope)I also asked if they ever walked with 50# on there back(Nope) Do you know your surroundings where you live(Nope ) I said well I would start there first. By the time we were done they had a better understanding what they should be looking at to put in there BOB and no 30# tent because it was on sale..

There is nothing more uncommon than common sense.

Good rant...coming from one of those office dwellers...got me some good wool socks with some good footwear to take me the 25ish miles to my house.

fortunately before i got my edumacation and went to the office (no I don't make 125K), i was a diesel mechanic in the Army reserves, worked construction (concrete work, framing, siding/windows/gutters, and steel buildings), know how to weld (MIG/Arc), and can do some minimal plumbing thanks to my Dad who is a licensed plumber. I try to do most of the work on my house myself. Put a subfloor in my basement so that the kiddos wouldn't be sitting on cold concrete in the winter. Hopefully this will carry me through....

I want to learn blacksmithing but that will have to wait until I can set up a forge once we get to the country.

Common sense has for the most part left a majority of the population unfortunately. Thanks for sharing your rant with us mere mortals...LOL

This lack of common sense in newbies and their equipment is because they are trying to teach rather than learn. youcanpostanythingtubers and some of these Nat Geos need to shut up and listen and actually get out and do. It's great that your excited about "prepping" and all but you need experience first before showing the world.
The other thing with jobs, overweight etc etc is that there is a common belief among preppers that they do have to change. They can buy their way out by having coolio gear. Even the recent shows re-enforce this belief and that battle rages very close by to me. I have never seen one place that fell apart where anyone made it that was on the extreme ends as i'm sure many other vets from several generations can attest to as well.
