  • Life Changing Event...

    Due to some personal decisions I made a few years earlier in my life. To makea long story short, I'm no longer to continue to look for work in the real business world.

    With being said, I think my best route would be to try to start up somekind of business that would allow me to have a more flexible schedule.
    I was trying to come up with some things that I could do in my area which isn"t already flooded.

    A couple of things I came up with is;
    1. There is no Army Surplus Stores even remotley close to the W. TN. Area (besides on-line). I have never started a business of any kind, so I would need to talk to someone local about that, But Does anyone know or how to purchase directly from the Government?
    2. Another thing may be to open a table in the local Fea markets to sell survival suppliesor even surplus gear. Again I would have no idea where to purchase wholesale, in order to make the pricing look good to potential buyers.

    If anyone may have a suggestion or two, it would be much appreciated. Please respond via "PM", as I don't want to break the advertising rule here.

    By the way my life has since been sorrted out, and feel very blessed to be given this second chance for life, and to continue practicing my new life (S&P). Sorry if thread is wonky, I did just get home from the hospital.

      Do what you love, love what you do... I wish I did, as I don't, but that is another post... If you love military surplus, I would think that not having store rent would be good and do the swap shops, but that surplus stuff can be big and bulky and a logistical burden, so a warehouse somewhere would be what I look into. Setting up and taking down all that stuff is a lot of work, so having a permanent display is nice as one gets on in the years...

      Also, the surplus tables I have seen at the gun shows seem to have mostly old stuff with probably dry-rotted fabric that would rip once put back into duty. So I'm not sure what you plan to sell, but I don't buy military surplus much now days... Now surplus EQUIPMENT is another story... That stuff can be a real bargain if it is what one is looking for.

      I also think all the real good stuff doesn't make it into the surplus market now days, but gets "transfered" to civilian use or exported to "allies" in the world.

      Think long and hard before putting $$$ into anything... I put money into a failed business once and it sucks as you watch it slowly die and you see how DREAMS and POSITIVE ATTITUDE obfuscates REALITY and serious number crunching on viability.

        What rmpl said.
        I once explored this rout but not a store front but rather gun show circut. I bought DMRO and new "off shore" stuff to sell. I spent a year doing this on a side table of my friends gun busines. There were weekends I would make some money and others where I did not make table rent.
        The tire kickers would come by the table mess the displayed items up and move on telling me how much cheaper they could buy it online or at amazon. The DMRO stuff needed going through and weeding out of usless broken etc. and the new stuff you compeated with the big online retailers with lower pricing due to their bulk purchasing. I was making a little money at it but not enough to warrent my time. You have to remember there is a price on your time (wages) as well. So I sold off my remaining inventory wile helping my friend hawk his gunwares. And spent my weekends in the central fl gun shows only instead of the whole state circuit and concentrated on my day job.

        On a side note I became a gear whore/snob at this time and was at the point I did not use like mil surp/ cheap end stuff any more and started buying high end gear for myself... thats another thread.
        Good luck with your business venture just be sure the money you use to start up you will be ready/willing to loose.

        I have lately been thinking about starting something back up to suppliment my pay again, but I have to put numbers to paper and figure in my time to see if it will be worth it. If you do not have any Business Management expierence I suggest BM course/s at the local college/community or JR. first. there is a lot involved and I dont know your expierence or profession...Just a FYI

        Good luck and have fun
