  • Can openers - what is a good one?

I go through can openers like they are plastic spoons! It is driving me crazy! I don't want an electric one, just a good hand held can opener. The last one I bought lasted about two months, the one before it didn't work at all, and the one before that worked for less than a month. I take good care of these stupid things and they are all JUNK! JUNK I SAY!:mad: I have bought cheap and expensive.

If two is one and one is none... I'm in the hole!

So please! What is a good brand of hand held can opener? :)

Ditto to GunNut and swingaway makes one with an angled handle that works better on T rats and #10 cans

P38 are a little tough on the fingers but they get the job done. I think they make P38 openers with a bar on them to make it easier.

We have one like what elittle is saying. I do not know the name of it and I can't find one on it but it is has a long handle, bottle opener, and an old can punch thing on it(the triangle thing you use for opening liquid cans). got it at a flee market and we keep it as back up. Works great all one piece of metel.

I was always a P-38 fan. I found one of the Oxo Good Grips openers that unseals the lid in a clearance bin for $2, so I thought I would give it a try and I love it!!! I went back and there was one more in there and I bought it also. The below one is fancier than mine which is probably why the old model ended up in the clearance bin. More and more of the cans I buy have the pull tabs on them anymore now that I have a nice opener...;o)

I have long liked the Swing-a-way type can openers, though they do sell two grades, and the Swing-a-way Jr model is not as good as the other larger models. Looking at the company information now, it seems to have been absorbed by a multinational corp and is no longer US made. The 6090 model has a crank which would make it lots easier for anyone with wrist problems to use.
I have been using one of the edge cutter style can openers for some time, but in using it daily for come canned dog food for an old dog, it died and I was back to using the Swing-a-way unit. I do like the edge cut system for ease of dumping out a clump of dog food though.
For final backup, I always have my Victorinox SAK in my belt pouch, and it will never fail me. With my SAK I can do a perfect imitation of the cut the old church key type openers did on juice cans. I recently opened a can of condensed milk with my SAK, and that sure beats any cutter style opener for that purpose. I still remember when you needed them to open beer cans. LOL

The Swing a way is my first choice but if it comes down to a handy pocket unit go for the one on your swiss army knife. Very hardy in construction and much better than the P38 or P52.

I personally like the old timey ones that work like P-38s but have a long handle for leverage. They are very hard to find now. No cranks to break, just works on a blade and leverage system. With some hunting I found a modern version, called the butterfly from Sweden, for $10. I will be buying several - nothing to break on them, and they come in bright colors so you can find them in the kitchen drawer. Plus the handle is large enough to give one some leverage, and with a small enough file, you could re-shapen it. I cant down-load a photo, but it is listed under "YLiving - norman-Copenhagen Butterfly Can Opener"
and their phone number is 1-800-236-9100

Wish I could send a photo, they are quite nice looking.
