  • Scripture telling me I should prep

I don't know if this the right section to put this but if not let me know and I will move it.

I am looking for Scripture that tells me that I should be doing the thing I am doing (prepping). I am very new to religion and don't know God words inside out like some. I have always had a wanting of self preparedness and the ability to take care of my own and my family but lately I have been wanting to know if God wants me to. I have been praying and feel that I am on the right track BUT the other day a coworker and I got talking about doomsday preppers and he said that we are nothing but hoarders and that we don't have enough faith in the Lord. I almost snapped. I just walked away that all I could do.

Does anyone know of any Scripture to point me into the right direction. I am NOT looking for scripture to go back to him and say here you go now what, I am looking for myself and my family's needs.
    thanks

    joseph story..
i young cocky man is run off by his family.. he ends up in egypt.. there he interprets a dream that famine is coming and the people should
store up 20% of their production. they do... they are then able to "feed the world" ... the egyptians were heathen. but God had sent joseph
to predict this famine. his own family became slaves, because they ran the messenger off.. the totality of this story has meant a lot to me.

    noah story..
God told noah a huge flood was coming and that he should build a huge boat and stock it with animals and food just for his family. everyone laughed at noah... ridiculed him.. it took him many years.. maybe a 100 ?? of ridicule and telling folks of what was coming. he did as he was told.
there is no recording of noah throwing out a life line or a life jacket to those who laughed. but noah and his family were saved.
    --
    in proverbs
there is a message that a man must take care of and prepare for his family..
    --
    jesus
in matthew warns of coming famine and pestilence, jailings and killing. that he may come in the night to his people.
a few young girls believe him and go get some extra fuel for their lanterns. some don't buy extra fuel. the ones that don't have
extra fuel don't get to the celebration.

i welcome you to The Faith..
read slowly in His Book.. i pray that our King open your eyes as you read.
these are a few examples that come to mind. may He bless you and all who read and believe.

      1 Timothy 5:8
Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

      Proverbs 21:20
The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.

      Proverbs 30:25
      Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer;

Just so you know God desires a relationship with you and God hates religion.

Ecclesiastes 11:2 Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land. NIV

Along with the Proverb verse already listed about "In the house of wise are stores of choice food and oil".

1 Timothy 5:8 "Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."

I have ran into this hoarding and lack of faith mentality in my own family. It can be frustrating. You can say something like lots of Christians have starved to death that had faith. Also remind them of Joseph and if he hadn't saved in the years of plenty they would have starved. When people use "hoarding" they use it to mean that you won't share and they take it out of context by this implication. Techinically hoard is a cache of ____. We do intend to share our food and other items with our family and maybe our friends if we are able to. Our first duty is to our own household. I have an inlaw said it was a lack of faith, my thought is we will both have faith and God will provide through me by me stocking up food. God does provide for our needs and based on scripture out of Proverbs it usually is through our labor. God doesn't just drop food and money into our hands.

          Hope this helps.

I read 1 Thessalonians 5 and came away with a story of what we are facing while prepping.

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.

There are a number of factors for which I prep, and one of those is a "feeling" that this is what God would have me do. I think these verses kind of shine a light on how we are viewed and why we prep. Where is says "the Lord will come like a thief in the night," you could exchange that with any catastrophe that you might be prepping for. We prepare out souls for His return, but in interim we prepare our homes for any times of tribulation that may arise. We are children of the light, meaning (in terms of prepping) we understand the need to be more self-sufficient and have a plan, while we can all count the many people that belong to the darkness. Those are the people that think that our tin foil hats are all on a little too tight. The lesson, Biblically, is to prepare our souls and build our relationship with Jesus and let Him lead, guide and direct us in all we do. The lesson to me is also about prepping. Hopes this help. Also, everyone else here had some good ones that I hadnt thought of.

Here's the verse that I believe points the way to prepping for Christians.

Luke 22:35 & 36 (New King James Version)

22:35 And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”
                  So they said, “Nothing.”

22:36. Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one."
