  • Doomsday Preppers

Evidently, there is a new show coming on, with the first episode next Tuesday, 2/7/12, on National Geographic channel.
My take is that it is without merit, and designed to make fun of any and all that are seriously considering preparation for hard times ahead.
The name of the show is pejorative, "Doomsday Preppers". They go out of their way to portray those involved as Southern rednecks, stupid, fat and uneducated.
This sort of garbage won't do any of us any good.

They've already made a show or two, and my wife has seen it. She'd been kinda ok with me occassionally suggesting things we could do to prepare, and occassionally buying more rice, but when she saw the show, something clicked in her, and she realized that there was a lot of things to do to prepare, and that there's a lot of reasons to prepare.
I haven't seen the show because I work nights, and believe me when I tell you I think that there's probably some truth in what you say. One of the guys looked like the "I'm from the internet and I'm here to help" pic that floated around from time to time. Brrrrr, get in shape people! Round doesn't count. One thing I do know is that it fostered conversation and action in my own family.
    I'll call that a win.

We attended a Prepper conference in SC in October. We met a couple of the guys that were on the original show- SouthernPrepper and Engineer1775. Both are real deal guys.

The National Geographic gal was there pushing for interviews. We politely declined.

I was stupid enough to talk to the press in the 1990's at the first couple Preparedness Expos we did. Words were always twisted and like Knocky said, people were made to look like "ignet rednecks."

Course I told the Nat Geo gal that when she pushed for an interview. Got the "we are different, blah blah blah" talk. Just smiled and told her thanks but no thanks. Telephone interview.... maybe LOL.

The first show didn't seem to have anyone that had been doing this for over a decade. SouthernPrepper and Engineer seemed to be the most experienced ones. The gal living in yuppieland in Arizona that acted like an authority but gave bad advice obviously had extremely limited actual experience.

But then again, that is the state of this movement at this particular juncture.

Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Yeah I remember seeing them on that first episode, I watch their youtube channel they got some good info and are very creative which helps this analytical guy think be successful while in the box :) I was impressed with their wood gasifier.

I will watch this new one and delete the crappy episodes.

I do not trust anyone in the media. I have dealt with them for years and know them too well. Ratings are too important to them. Look at shows people like to watch. Wipe Out is a good example. Find people willing to make fools of themselves on TV. Or try America's Funniest Home Videos. They are not here to seek the truth. They are here to get the best ratings they can. GB
