Internet status post EMP

There are things in life I have talent for and those that I have highly developed skill for and then there's electronic technology. So here 's the scenario ( and I apologize if it's been done already):

Let's say that you have been diligent in lining up Emp protected alternative power sources and have Faraday-caged all your important electronics. Assume that grid power is down and that local cell phone service is absent. How can you get Internet access?

??? Data card from a foreign satellite phone to work a laptop? Could that work?

what of your electronics have you faraday'd? Which ones would you like to have in a cage? What are you using for your cages

Like my Software Engineering Instructor told us "It Depends"....Does the local ISP router have power if not then you are out of luck, if it does have power who's to say it wasn't damaged by the EMP. These 2 things will determine whether or not you have internet post EMP.

This would depend on the location of the satellite at the time of the even, if the it is in geosynchronous orbit and if the EMP was large enough it might not survive either. I have seen some limited testing on video of the effects an EMP would have on a car, the windows would roll up, but this EMP was small in scale. Frankly we don't know enough to say for sure. I have read the EMP report that the author of "1 Second After" talks about on his site and I couldn't get a clear answer.

SAT phone goes directly to satellite, verizon smart phone goes to nearest tower. Hope this helps. You could protect your electronics but we have no guarantee that the telcos and power companies protected their stuff. hope this helps.

Just thought there might be a chance...and there still might be.I was assuming I'd have to sully my own power. Likely battery, as generator current would likely to too unstable for such devices

IMO It would be a long time before i had time to check for anything or try and get news from "somewhere" after an EMP strike. Wayyyyy to much work to be done in defense, food, water, alt energy etc

After an EMP we would likely HAVE a long period of time before that could happen, but at some point if there is visual communication that can be established , it may be very helpful. Just wanted to try to think it out ahead of time.

Seriously??? You guys are too much lol. But I am serious, I dont think that writing off the ability to use the web to help the survival and medicine in the PAW is something that should be done right off the bat. I think there may be layers of protection that could make this possible. AND I guess,... Yes I imagine you could play games if that's your thing, lol

It would be great if it worked but it is highly doubtful IMO. Just the complications of storing the laptop in the faraday cage when not in use or having a second one stored in case i'm on mine when it hits posting something on S&P plus the additional power supplies needed to be properly stored to run the computer and then hoping that the net still works after an emp strike when it wont even work right during small solar flares now or storms etc. I just dont have the resources for a maybe based on the folks who dont prepare that actually run the net/servers etc.
Will I try? Of course right after i secure everything which will be days later but if I even get the computer to work it would be mainly for the flash drive prepper stuff stored, alt lighting from the screen or maybe to rob the battery power for something else.

With an EMP we are just guessing. We don't know how much Electrical components would survive. I am not going to count on it being there. Print off your prepper documents and put them in binders. Then get the rest of your gear in order before planning to stash a laptop or tablet in a faraday cage.

Why do you think this? Develop an alternate energy plan now.

I would suggest HAM radio before SAT phone. I am studying for my Technical license now. qrprat and others can tell you more about HAM radio. They can connect them to computers and do a quasi internet through HAM radios. With certain antenna's you can broadcast hundreds to thousands of miles. That is the route I am going for PAW communications.

I will have to build in alternate energy into my plan just in case.

Well Ham is already in the equation, storing an extra dedicated laptop is not out of the question.
