  • Primitive Camping in North GA

Folks, its that time of the year again for some serious Camp Freeze your Tail Off.

I am looking for some suggestions from any one on here that knows of some cool primitive sites in North GA.

We have camped at Wildcat, most on Horsetrough and off of Warwoman.

Our requirements are high altitude, water close by and within 100 yards of where the trucks sits.

We were going to do a backpacking trip but none of us want to haul 60lbs of gear and have to deal with wet wood. Sorry but this aint a survival situation, its a fun trip.

So if anyone knows of some really cool spots in the hills of north Ga, please share. We have one place in mind but it is 3 miles from people and we usually like to go pretty remote. I talked with the Forestry Service today and she said that there are 1000's of primitive campsites, you just gotta find em. Well, we are arriving at night that day so finding will not be fun....

    Thanks in advance.

dont know when your trip is WO but if it is this coming weekend getting to the remote places is going to be tough. We have had rain for 6 days now and its a mudded mess.

That said, lake conasauga has some nice places within an easy short hike from the park place . if you go to the ball ground area and park, there will be a trail to the left that leads along a nice ridge there is a water source off the left hand side of the ridge in a nice area.

Noontootla creek in Suches has some excellent spots all along the creek area. Dont know how far back you can get in there as they have stopped maintainin some fo the hog trails but it is one of our favorite places to go off season.

Jacks river has some excellent places to hike n camp, water is available but this time of year can be difficult to navigate through and around..

Panther creek also has some very nice areas to camp and spend time in..

When the manthing gets home later I will ask him what he can think of, he knows the areas a bit better than i do.. :) of course if ya get up this way and cant find a place or have any troubles ... the gate is always open and the cohutta is all that is behind us..

      Thanks Dilli,

Definitely not this weekend...its raining cats and hogs aint it?

We always plan our trip by the farmer almanac and only go on the coldest weekend on the year and especially when it snows.....
We were on Horsetrough Mtn. a couple of year ago in negative 15 degrees! That was a challenge.

We backpack the Cohutta all the time, it is great isnt it? I found up there near Hickey Gap has some sites but they are the kind where a bathroom is close by. We go remote as possible. We will get out in the bush but as long as we are less than 100 yards from the trucks ( so we can haul our firewood.)

If the "manthang" knows of some more, please throw em out there. There are so many places to go its overwhelming. Me and the fam may ride up to the hills this weekend or next just to do some recon.

      Thanks

GA has high altitude? You should try a winter camping trip out to CO. LOTS of remote camping sites and you would meet all of your requirements! ;)

We haven't lived in GA for years now but I loved camping around Blue Ridge area. The water was so clear back then and the area was so great to look at. Hope you have a great time. I am sure that a lot of other people have discovered that area by now. Probably a retirement home by now.

                  Here is some winter pics......

The one with the tents the temp was around -3 at that time.

Yeah, Blue Ridge is actually near where we are looking. Off a dirt road near Vogel State Park.

I would LOVE to be able to go to Colorado and camp out there, its a dream!

And Pisgah is a thought, but with us getting off at 5 that Friday, its going to be hell getting up there and finding our early leavers, there is not one drop of cell service up there for them to give us directions......I want to do Standing Indian Mtn. next spring.
