  • Bad Habits that wont fair well if there ever is a PAW..

First, lets eliminate the obvious ones like smoking, drinking, out of shape, eat all of your prep food, etc...........

Think about something that you do now that could become critical in this make believe future that we all plan for.........

For instance, for some reason my wife and I cant save food. We will make a big pot of chili, or soup, or spaghetti that we are going to eat on for a few days and somehow we dont and its a waste.
I made a ham last Sunday for NYD and for the Falcons game. We ate all day on it and some Monday but after that, we just went around it in the fridge. I thought about this as I was dumping out about 5lbs of ham tonight. Not lazy, just so busy and end up forgetting. That could prove critical in a world opposite of now. That could feed a squad for a couple of days.

Also, we waste water. Even though I store water like a waterworld bandit, we seem to think carelessly about it. I like to take long warm showers in the morning and so does the Mrs. The boys get a shared bath in the morning (just started doing this to start conserving) and another bathe off with maybe 2 gallons in the evening. I know that now I just turn on a faucet and there it is but in the fictitious land of the dookie fan, I may have 1 gallon to make 4 baths.

Maybe getting out of these comfortable habits may help me if something ever happens. It definitely could save us a couple of dollars a week. We have even talked about this to the extent of only making enough of a meal to where there is not any leftovers and by trying to take what I call an RV water heater shower..........3-4 mins tops.

So what are some things that you may do now that could be changed to help you better survive in a Rawlesworld?

Like the other thread about the screws, nails and stuff. Lots of folks wouldn't even think to toss out simple things like that. Basically one just needs to look at what they throw away and go from there.

Let me put some thought into this. Interesting question

Well dont drink, dont use tobacco, workout although that can always use improvement. With my crew we dont waste alot of food and when things like ham n beans are left we freeze them and eat them later. I mean seriously youve seen me and my son, dont much get past us LOL! My redneck self dont throw away much till I have stripped it down. Makes for alot of cleanout when we move though. Maybe soon I will get that cured and get regrounded hopefully a little more depression proof this time around after really screwing up the last one thinking I could trust that I would be allowed to also live the American dream after leaving the service.
However on the water. I spent 20yrs and a heck of alot of it taking baths in a helmet (when we had steels pots) and have washed the willie bobos with frozen cloth and sand covered wipes and used a old razor, no water and a truck mirror to shave with more times than I care too and went 21 days without and I am gonna take me a hot long shower every chance I get cause I earned mine!!!! Although it is now with soap we made, thanks to Karen and her teaching.
You go right ahead and practice though waterworld bandit :)
Good stuff though, guess my challenge is getting the rest of the clan to step up.

It all boils down, kind of, to self-control and self-discipline, and outlook I think. To me prepping is a way of life, not something I did or do. I have gotten into the habit of living conservatively every day, by choice, so when SHTF my life will not change much at all. IN the meantime, saves time and $$ every day which in these unsettled economic times is a boom for me. Basically it's like the mantra "store what you eat and eat what you store" = "practice what you preach" on a daily basis.

I don't know if it is a bad habit or not but here is a habit that will be gone, done, kaput, missing in the post-SHTF world.

Sitting on our cans for long periods surfing the internet or playing video games.

Won't be any of that when we are working to stay alive and provide for our families.

I think it's more than just cause we'll be busy.... Will there EVEN BE an internet?!?!? If we're hit with an EMP, everything will be toast. If it's something else that takes the grid down, even if some of us have generators, will there be anything powering the ISP's or the network?

It will be flashback to the 1970's.... (Where did I put my CB Radio??)

Didn't mean to imply it would be necuase we were too busy; I figure the Net will be gone. Our focus will be on survival and family and there won't be enough hours in the day. Heck, there arne't enough hours in the day NOW to get all the stuff done that I need to.

OP was about bad habits, that was the first one that came to mind.

Another thing I thought about this morning is a comfy wipe.........in the PAW you may only have 1 ply to use not the normal triple wraparound! I will take my chance with the phone book and keep up my comfy wipe.

Another is sleeping in.............HA, that will be non existent, hell a good sleep will be a rare art.

A comfy wipe is NOT a bad habit!!!!!!!!!! it will be, however, a fond memory.... like the internet, deodorant, cable tv, and.... gasp.... this forum. We will be missing lots of things.

Another habit I will have to break is hopping on my motorcycle and going for a ride just for the fun of it with no destination in mind. THAT I will miss big time.
