It seems clear from this thread and others I have seen, that most of us are going nowhere unless forced to... And if forced to leave, many would not fare well as days turn to weeks in a strange AO filled with locals that see you as invaders... I admit, I am one, and I will try to stay put as long as possible, as I see my survival pobability dropping dramatically once I bug out... I say such because I think when a bug-out level event hits (excluding localized natural disasters), it will be extremely dangerous and will get deadly fast, especially if one is loaded down with valuable gear and weapons... Almost anyplace I have ever set foot east of the Blue Ridge on down south to Florida has people traffic, either local hunters, ATV'ers or 4x4'ers. There is NO PLACE to hide or bug out to, as you WILL be found sooner or later, and it may be a surprise when it happens.

That said, I plan in STAGES... BUG IN first at my warm, well-set-up home, then BUG OUT with the 4x4 OF DOOM and the CAMPER of PAIN loaded to max capacity... Then via Bicycles From Hell or at LAST RESORT, off BY FOOT with BOB into the wilds (reality: private land with fences, hoping not to get shot tresspassing, as there are no wilds left in my AO). I am not under the delusion that "survival" films spoon-feed us that one can live in the wilds somewhere LONG TERM... Not in this area of the USA you won't... Many will die, and life will SUCK, but I hope my extra measures keep me alive longer than the next guy "bugging out" a stones throw away... LOL!

      Good thread Matt!

Matt- there is one thing that worries me above all the stuff that you have wisely mentioned. And that is Fire.

Now, I know in the cold areas currently, this is not exactly on anyone's mind, but with all the large influx of refugees into forested or rural areas- over heating of cars, carelessness, lack of equipment and skills on their parts- Fire concerns me a great deal. Some people I have met, have never "camped" or "roughed it" before, even some of the so called, "hunters". Starting and maintaining a fire correctly and safely, is as foreign to them as a jihadist holding a peace sign.

Uncontrolled fire is one thing hardly ever talked about in the PAW situation. I will tell you this, if the SHTF and people are bugging out, it won't be long before fires start to control the urban areas.
Now, firefighters, cops, paramedics, nurses, docs, are all very dedicated people. However they are for the most part all fanily members. A good portion will not go to work if society breaks down. I talked to a research person who did a study on this a while back and they estimated a 20% reduction in the work forces. However she admitted they lowballed the number to make the study more palatable. She thinks the reduction will be more like 50%.
If you cut any Fire Department's manning by 50% and start numerous fires (which will happen) due to arson or other nefarious means, the crews will soon be quickly overwhelmed, may not be able to get to fires due to civil unrest (L.A. 1984) or will be outright attacked (L.A. again).
If the weather conditions are right, I could see firestorms of apocalyptic proportions occuring with a 40-75% destruction rate in the big cities, especially the older ones where houses were built literally touching each other. Suburbs may not see as large a percentage of devastation due to wider spacing of construction, wider streets, and more fire resistive construction, however they still will be dangerous areas due to the heavy smoke and gasses, not to mention the releases of hazardous materials.
Forest fires will definitely be an issue depending again on what time of year it will be. They will run unchecked as no one will be available to fight them. Fires will start due to carelessness or arson, or even natural events.
Just another thing to worry about.

And for those who are not leaving I understand where you are coming from and if your are at peace then so be it, you had have made your choice. For the rest there may be much work to be done. Don't get me wrong, I dont have a bugout place of my own either but i know dang good and well where i can't go because all the okie idjits are a headin thatway. My skills will carry us a long ways but then again a little ole buggie virus might take me out right when i'm needed the most, only the Lord knows this for sure.
Actually I did here but you are very correct. Also look at all the fires caused by illegal immigrants this year alone

great thread. I had to erase my responses twice because I fell into a rant myself. I will just say this, it would be very interesting to see just how many of the folks on the forum who have even one water filter. Water is going to be a very heavy item and a filter had better be a part of your BOB. A gallon of water weighs in at over 9 pounds. If you are carrying 5 of the 7 gallon Reliance containers that is 35 gallons or over 300 pounds of your total 500 pound limit in a half ton truck. I hope you rant might wake some folks up. GB

Matt- You are 100% correct. My apologies to you for that oversight on my part. I feel very silly now.

I guess I should have said more about the man made disasters (fire) during a PAW event or exodus.

I will keep my illegal immigrants comments to myself, since that is a rant all on it's own. ;) (Grew up in Fresno, CA...... enough said)

But I did however like the video this last year on CNN of the 22 foot tall fence being jumped by the illegal aliens. When Border patrol was asked how they (illegal immigrants) were doing it, they (Border Patrol) weren't sure since they only installed video cameras on 1 side of the fence.... ours.... ah the simple things..... :)

                      swapped offers
                      --
i've offerred a couple of folks that are pretty "in" to this subject the option...
"hey, i'm sure it won't get bad at your bol, but if it did, you can head to our spot if you'd like."

                      there was very little interest.
there bol is excellently located, equipped, etc..
                      my spot is not.
                      --
so i understand their reluctance to consider the option i proposed..
                      --
                      but here's my question...
have you swapped offers with a friend/relative ??
hey if it looks like the muslim hoard is about to swarm your area, head to mine. grab what you can
                      and head this way.

of course this would have to be someone you TRUSTED.
and if you did make the offer, did they immediately return the offer?
and if you made the agreements....
did you sit down and make preliminary plans...
for instance ... did you each locate a cache of clothing at the other location for all of the family group?
if you didn't i don't think you really made serious offer/counter offer..
                      just saying...

so, regardless of your answer.. to my question.
                      i make this a suggestion...
swap offers with folks you already know and trust.
swap basics at each location. clothing for instance.

this way, when the unforseen happens, there won't be a lot of wasted time
thinking "hey where can we go?

                      just an idea.

RR, we have a very similar arrangement in my MAG. We meet regularly, can communicate via 2-meter simplex, are within a couple of days walking distance and have an agreement to back each other up as needed should TSHTF. We routinely work and train at each other's property as well. We've been building our MAG for about 4 years now, and it seems to get more and more apparent that we may (unfortunately) see the day when we really need it.
