  • You buying today?

Silver 28.90 - was less earlier in the day IIRC.

    Gold 1575.

Do you buy PM's? What's your plan if you do? Regular purchases irregardless of the price, a certain number of ounces every so often, only buying at a certain price level, etc?

Any tips from the pros out there?

BTW, we need a good Precious Metals dealer here on the forums as an advertiser. Doesn't have to be a huge dealer, just an honest one that will treat S and P'ers well.

Would have bought some, but will have to wait until Friday afternoon. I hope it stays relatively the same, but have seen it rise and fall before. Junk silver and some American Eagles or Morgan dollars will be my choice. I have a dealer nearby, so I can hold it and smell it first. ;-)

I have a significant amount of PMs and plan to keep it. Sometimes, I look at the downs and cringe thinking if I'd waited a few days I could have paid less, but then I look at what I purchased at $14.00 and ounce and am very happy.

The secret is to purchase it for the long term. They'll be ups and downs, but over time the worth of PMs increases. ALL of my PMs is physical. I want to be able to hold it in my hand and get to it should I need it. I have used APMEX many times and have had a very positive experience.

This was about what I paid last time I bought any- about a year or so ago now. Picked up a few and will wait to see if it goes lower. For some reason the cheapskate in me says $25. is about right. I doubt it will get there but it's nice to hope huh? ;)

It's funny the wife and I were just talking about long term plans, etc. the other night. I told her that I thought the market was overpriced. She said "well the problem is we are used to only buying things on sale or when we get a discount on them. We don't run out and buy a flat screen TV when they first come out. We bought one 7 years later at a Black Friday sale for $180. They don't run "sales" on metals."

When I bought a little bit yesterday I said "hey hon, I found a "sale" on metals."

Yes long term the price may not matter much. But what about the folks that bought silver at $47. an ounce? They are still, a couple years later down $17. I realize it's just a "paper loss" but nevertheless. I guess it's the tightwad in me that hates over paying :)

I bought a few hundred ounce's in 84-85 time period just because I wanted to have some and thought wow this is cheap compared to 79-80 or whatever the peaks were. Sold the bars in early 90's when I needed money. All I have now is $100 or so of old US silver coins.
I guess in my opinion I am not seeing it that practical in an S & P plan. And maybe it’s because I am more a Homesteader- P. with a bit on the S in my gun's ammo.
To me it is a good hedge against inflation in a hyperinflation period but It seems to be a pyramid scheme in that it only has value that someone as a luxury. In that I mean the only time someone will buy PM's is when all their basic needs are met. To a person without a home food or protection PM's have no value but food for trade, a vehicle, guns and ammo those are needs that person has and wants.
And in the non SHTF situations the market makers are all behind the scenes types. Right now I still have a bit of a mortgage so all extra dollars goes on eliminating that. After that I plan on buying some more land as my hedge. I currently have a good chunk in 401K that I have in cash because I don't like where stocks or bonds are going in the next few years.
And for the few hundred extra I get right now I am sticking it into some food storage, home improvement, guns and ammo, equipment, tools.
Sometimes I am a bit to practical on things and would much rather but sitting on a bunch of rifle brass and corn that I know what to do with than PM's.

Computerguy I buy junk silver at Bullion direct. Thats all I buy now since Im loaded up on bullion and want small value coins. If the dollar become worthless it will be easier to make small purchases with mercury dimes and quarters.

Nor me, I don't think gold or silver will do anyone a bit of good in the future I foresee. I believe barter will be the way goods and services are exchanged. And the necessities (food, water, arms, ammunition, fuel et al) will be the primary currency, although some "luxury" items, TP for an example may also bring quite a bit in the beginning. So, yep, I'm putting my time and money into those things. Who knows though, I could definitely be wrong and precious metals may be the foundation for a post SHTF economy, although history does teach us that it may take a lot of gold or silver to buy a loaf of bread in a worst case scenario.

                              Saw this today.

I buy PM's for two specific reasons. One is for a hedge against inflation. Meaning, if you had a $20 gold coin in the 1920's, you could have bought a very nice suit from one of the finest stores near you. If you have a $20 gold coin today, you could do the same. The other reason I buy PM's, specifically junk silver, is for PAW trading/buying and wealth preservation/inflation hedge. Junk silver, dimes and quarters, I feel would be best. I also think that bartable goods and services will be important to have as well. YMMV
