  • LTS of cooking oils and shortening

Has anyone tried to prepare oils or shortening for long term storage? Can shortening be transferred to a metal container? Does it need an oxygen absorber, salt added to it, or what to preserve it? I haven't found any info on this. :(

I have three five gallon pails of lard that I semi melted and poured in mylar bags that are inside of plastic pails, I also have about fifteen gallons of canola oil vac sealed in mason jars and strored where it is dark . both are packed for emergency, for everyday use I would recomend olive oil, we also have about fifteen gallons of that.Oil that is rancid in easy to pick out.

I've purchased these large cans of Crisco and have then stored in a freezer. I understand Crisco lasts a long time. Anyone have any experience with it?

Crisco is probably the longest lasting of the ones mentioned IME.

We rotate our oils every about 3 years. Sometimes they are bad by the time we get to them. Then we pour a little bit on the dogs dry food every day till each gallon is used up. It adds calories and fat to the dog food and helps their coat in the winter.

Last year I was given about five gallons of peanut oil that was stored in a very dark and cool basement in original half gallon containers. The gentleman gave it away because his wife wouldn't use anything past it's "use by" date. It has excellent smell and taste and we are still using it. The oil came from this man's Y2K stash, it is dated 1998.

Thanks everyone. The ideas are great. Thought about transferring lard or shortening to mylar and buckets, Crossbow, but wasn't sure if the mylar plastic could handle the heat. I'll give it a try. Maybe peanut oil has a longer shelf life and the cool darkness helped. Think I'll check with the peanut farmers here in AL.
