I don't discourage the deer from eating in the orchard, nor do I pick up the fruit that falls because it keeps the bear from tearing up trees to get to the apples and pears. With 40+ trees that no longer get commercially harvested it's no big deal that the dear prune up the lower branches. Besides they have been coming into that orchard for over 50 years and have NEVER been hunted there so I know that in a pinch they will be there should I need them. I also leave several brush piles around the place as habitat for the quail, it helps to protect them from predators and assures me a place to find them should the need arise.;)
