There's not a whole lot of hunting available here in the city limits, not to mention that pesky law they have about using a firearm within the city...

    HOWEVER......

I have a couple cats who aren't even earning their keep now.... :)

When it comes to that the laws may or may not exist. Blowguns, archery, airguns etc. Theres not a whole lot of food in the city of any kind so thats an issue to begun with that needs sloving
Pigeon, sparrows, dogs, cats, bird eggs, lizards, frogs, fruits n nuts from trees, dandelions (I know they are in the city) etc

I am part Native American, my grand father was full blood and raised on reservations in OK Indian Territory. He pointed something out to me when I was a child and it has stuck with me to this day. We live in Texas which is a very big place I think we can all agree. At their height Native Americans in Texas never numbered more than 25,000. Living off the land is not as easy as it sounds. Grand Father wanted me to understand this since he and my parents were survivalists. They knew that you had to have more than a gun and a fishing pole to survive. It is a nice fantasy for many of us to have but the truth can kill you.

If people are without food they will kill anything that moves and use what they can right then and leave the rest to rot. They will cut trees down for firewood with no thought of long term implications. Look at Haiti and the Dominican Republic. They are on the same island but you can see the line where the border is from the air. Haiti looks like a bomb went off and wiped it out while the Dominican Republic still has heavy forestation. Don't plan on living off the land for long. GB

I've been reading "When all H3ll breaks loose" by Cody Loundin (dual survivors). Same message he gives....those that romanticize living off the land in an emergency have a BIG surprise waiting for them. Even with a farm, there's a reason why the pioneers only lived to 30 something on average.

I briefly skimmed this thread (time is limited for me right now) so please excuse me if I wind up repeating what others may have said. I've given some thought to this idea in the past. I wouldn't rely on hunting any kind of animal for a long period of time. Our population, I'm sure you all know, has increased beyond that type of capacity. It would be only a short time until all animal populations would be wiped out...including domestic animals. So I think other food sources need heavier consideration.

We are careful not to take anything more than what we need. No sense in shooting 2 deer a year when our small freezer holds only most of one and then the rest is jerked.

Oh yes! I wasn't trying to point that finger at anyone in here. I'm sure that the population in this forum knows better than to do what I had said. But I think the average 'zombie' would in a panic state. It's them I put the blame on.

                              but my toolbox holds 4:)

I wouldnt rely on hunting alone however I will supplement it with what is availible and by availible i mean everything. This is just to get the grey matter turning into what everything really means. The animal population will never be 100% wiped out. Certain animals such as deer got wiped out in western Oklahoma in the 30s and didnt recover until great efforts were made 30+yrs later but other critters thrived and were greatly ignored by folks who were hungry but unwilling, untrained and unknowledgable on what can be eaten.

In my area, there are many oaks of many different varieties. All acorns can be made edible, some easier than others. Peel them, chop them up and boil them in a few changes of water till it stays clear. Then you have a source of protein, carbs and fat. Most will not even consider eating the acorns, so it is a source which will likely last awhile. Some good books on edibles in your area will be a lifesaver, and an eyeopener. One more place where knowledge is power, and ignorance is deadly.
