  • Money in a different society

Most of us prepare for the eventuality of a economical collapse in one form or another. There are many schools of thought as to how this will play out and what will be used and we make our best SWAGs with the limited knowledge given to us. This is not a commentary of what is right or wrong but a discussion on the fact that there will be some form of currency always along with the barter system.

Past history has shown us that this is true as empires come and go and also there is an modern day overlooked community that shows us what happens when there is a sudden thrust of events forced upon a large group of individuals who are in a community environment.

These individuals utilize the resources at hand to barter, trade and will even work off debts with what skills they have. The form of money in this case is a readily availible resource being postage stamps which have a maintained value of the going rate which is set by those that have them and outside forces much as our current tender notes are controlled.

The removal of cash from their enviroment, many years ago, barely slowed the economic maneuvering and trade for commodities and goods from this society, much to the surprise of those who attempted to control it. Many of these subjects are thrust into this situation with little to no warning and bring with them no valuable assets with the except the skills they possess. They are given the same opportunity and as in every society there are those that fail and those that succeed.

They will cache, hoard, hide and preserve any improvised money they come in contact with and will even "launder" their monies and liquidate stock when needed for fast GOOD. Their community suffers very little for wants except for the norm in society of affordabilty. There are those that will loan the going currency for inflated rates much as banks or other forms of credit lines both legal and illegal.
There are investments to be had even though they have suffered TEOTWAWKI in their mind frames.

What it shows is that money itself is not run by an unseen force, usually deemed as evil in this circle, but by those who are in a communal environment who have and wish to have.

For those who have not figured it out by now the group is prison inmates.

This society shows how quickly and readily one can/will adapt to any form of known economics. It is also something to be viewed with an open mind of not right nor wrong but how can I best fall into this to place myself in a decent situation without greed nor envy overcoming my thoughts during a PAW environment and what might be used that is commonly known and valued to the majority of society. It also shows that those with useful or just even wanted skills will flourish or at least make it whereas those without skills often fail and fall victim to their circumstances.

    Wow Matt, great post.

I know a guy that went to prison for 3 years. He said it taught him so much about the world and life that he is now more successful and seemingly more intelligent than when he went in back in 07. Given this wasnt the 'shank em up" type but prison none the least. He actually learned skills and read a ton of books.....

The only things he told me about it that I dont like is they got to watch Sportscenter and TV all day everyday and a lot of people are converting to Islam in there.

I have read that salt was one of the most valuable commodities during the Roman times, even more so than precious metals. Hmm, maybe I should buy another 50lb bag while it is still cheap?

Salt and spices were very sought after. It was even one of the things Columbus (no matter the opinion on him) was supposed to locate and bring back and the Asians used it for overseas exports for a long time as well. Salt was very sought after during the "old west" days too. Salt doesn't run a high a risk for coming back on you as alcohol or ammo either. It is easily broken down into smaller incraments just as money.

Salt was considered a currency many many many years ago. Reason why I snatch it up each time I make a prep run. I can get 2lbs for $1. If it all went down, salt would be something great to have a ton of.
