care to make a report on the economy in your area, or an area you are aware of?
    --
    east tennessee -
we visited relatives near knoxville and spent an additional few days in gatlinburg area.
on first look things look prosperous. heavy traffic in gatlinburg. but i've been asking folks
and paying attention to empty/closed businesses.
workers report most jobs are minimum wages because that's all a company has to pay to get workers.
there are lots of folks seeking employment. there is an empty brand new condo building next to our hotel that the bank repo'd. a huge nice restaurant building on a main drag is standing empty.
a church has been using it for a thrift shop.
    --
man got laid off from a bank. got job at hotel-minimum wage and is now back at another bank.
reports they are very busy with foreclosures of houses and businesses in this touristy area. he won't quit the hotel job because the bank job is low paying. two full time jobs.

i ask, why are yall so prosperous? finally got an answer that - folks are coming here instead of the florida beaches.. we have more business this summer than we did the last two summers.

    visiting a family-
there are two grown sisters that are like twins
    i got them both talking.
sister 1 does food storage in a serious way and she "preaches" the benefits to friends.
she and her family are not weapon savvy.
sister 2 lives out of state and starts talking about the need for weapons, and finally shares details. they have no food storage. they've already placed some weapons "back home."
if/when there's a problem. sister 2 is bringing family "back home"
(there are 3 homes occupying a significant corner of a small valley)

both are doing (food/weapons) because they see disaster looming.

as they talked. both began to see the need for the area they were slack in.

    it was encouraging.

I interact with small business a lot in my regular job. It's different from one business to another. One guy is crying poor, another is saying basically "yeah it's bad but we are doing o.k." Some are kicking butt.

Confidence in the economy is very low as far as I can tell.

The American consumer is used to purchasing stuff with lots and lots of easy credit. That credit has been tightened on pretty much ALL fronts. So even if they WANT to spend, they can't.

We've been debt free for a couple years. Kept a few credit cards cause sometimes in business they can be helpful for travel, etc. One card I've had since my early 20's that I haven't put a single dime on in probably 4 years cut my "limit" down to about 1/3. Ironic cause I haven't used it in YEARS. I don't even think I have a fully connected (i.e, not cut up) version of the card in my possession.

My thoughts on the whole "consumer" deal are these. When someone gets spoiled and "used" to purchasing crap regularly, it's really hard to break them of it. It's almost an addiction if you really think about it. I think with most of the GDP the "addiction" is still there, the credit just isn't.

Although I'm not advocating a return to the days of easy credit, that's one of the things that got us in this mess! I've been trying to feel positive about the economic situation but I think realistically we have a couple more years of this....
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"
