I agree with your two points, but so does the author, read it again."The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth." ~ H.L. Mencken

...The first time I read it, I guess I took it the wrong way.
I did really like his point about the "Rifled" barrel vs the smooth bore muscket.
And I missed "It validates the concept of personal property ownership, in this case one’s own person, and the principle of self-defense." the first time too.
It is a good Artical!
Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I see that he wrote it in a bit of a dramatic way to make a point. The first couple paragraphs in particular.
I really like your thoughts and the additional information you provided NYP, thank you."The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth." ~ H.L. Mencken

I really like this term. I think it really describes us as armed civilians, as opposed to any standing army or police force. This is the crux of the argument, IMHO. Some folks think that only government employees, i.e. soldiers, policemen, etc. have the right to bear arms. I think the original intent is very plain here. It is the right of the people to bear arms. I don't know how you can argue for individual rights, especially when it concerns your pet 1st ammendment, and yet claim the second doesn't apply. Serious bull**** if you ask me.

A standing army is great for Aggressive purposes... A good militia is great for defensive prepossess. Our founding fathers knew this.
Our government has some where along the way (I believe around 1st World War) changed from a Defensive (the actual divine right) foreign policy to an Offensive foreign policy and as such why we now have a large standing Army (even during times of "peace") and also why we now have more “Enemies” than ever before.
Here is a good article about Gun Laws in both US and Switzerland (its over 10 years old now but still very relevant):

All you have to do is look at what the founders said - The left is the party of big government and they fear an armed populous because it is a threat to their power
Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.
-- James Madison, The Federalist Papers
"The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."
-- Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers at 184-188
"As to the species of exercise, I advise the gun. While this gives [only] moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion to your walks."
-- Thomas Jefferson, writing to his teenaged nephew.
"To disarm the people... was the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
-- George Mason, speech of June 14, 1788
"The great object is, that every man be armed. [...] Every one who is able may have a gun."
-- Patrick Henry, speech of June 14 1788
That the said Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of the United states who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms...
-- Samuel Adams, in "Phila. Independent Gazetteer", August 20, 1789"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent." - Thomas Jefferson

Beware the cloud of deception that is Left vs. Right or Right vs. Left thinking."The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth." ~ H.L. Mencken

Jack Sprat could eat no fat.
His wife could eat no lean.
And so between them both, you see,
They licked the platter clean.
In our case the Left and Right are eating away at our "Constitution" and soon it will be gone along with all our rights and our jobs and our money.
