Our first day of Sukkot (Tabernacles) at Loft Mountain in the Shenandoah National Park... We had the best site in the camp, with amazing views... Too bad we weren't able to enjoy any of it...

Our spot was where the wind raced up the mountain and it was easily Tropical Storm strength. It took 8 people to set up our tent, and we barely succeeded! We had rope running everywhere... It pummelled us all night and no one got any sleep. Then, contrary to weather reports, the wind got WORSE the next day.

I didn't want to destroy my family tent so we broke down camp and abandoned the site. The campground was packed for fall colors and there were no other sites available, so we went back home... We were so bummed, as it really was beautiful with all the colors, but we all were beat...

Now I know why so many people have RV's... So I plan on getting my little 1965 Shasta Compact finished this weekend... If we had the little Shasta, it would have been loud winds, but it would have been fine...

We had a very nasty night once camping out. Was supposed to be just light rain and 50's. Turned out miserably windy, poured and 34 degrees. After a few of the nearby trees fell, we all ended up sleeping in the car.

Dang dude, I cant believe that tent held up! They were just saying on the UVA/ GTech game about some high winds in the last couple of days......wow

glad it worked out for you.
hearing that wind made me remember a
"campfire" campout.
some old geezer brought a big ole tarp.
then several of the campers set up their tents under the b.o.t.
wind blew all night. tarp kept out the rain and helped a little with the cold.
BUT.. the tarp popped and crackled in the wind all night.

So, the tent survived but you did not. The sound of the wind on nylon would have made me call uncle long before the next morning. You must be a TRUE camper.

I have a design for a tarp shelter that would likely be able to handle weather like that and provide shelter for plenty of people. PM me and maybe I can have one made for you.

I had a similar experience but according to the locals the wind had hit 70 mph on the local news . No fun had that night , about 2 am I got out of the tent and went to sleep under my 94 toyota I had at the time ,woke up in snow that had blew under the truck . I crawled out and went back up the hill to where the tent was to find my friend snoring away in it with the 4 man tent on its side . He still gets ribbed about it .

That happened not far from you out side of bedford in april 04 I think.
