  • Police Encounter

A recent incident got me thinking and I would like some opinions on it.

My parents live in an upper middle-class suburb of a large north eastern city. I keep my preps in their basement while I go to school 200 miles away. My preps include a number of firearms, significant amount of ammo and about 3 months worth of food for my extended family who do not see the need to prepare. Recently a teenage girl went missing and as the police told us, her last phone call was triangulated to within 50 yards of my parent

Get your stuff out of there. Think about it - the S has hit the F - and you're going to be trying to get into a large north eastern city...probably a week after the fact (unless you can get a ride all of the way there.)

Many various options, but I would want at least some of my preps where I could make use of them rather than have some sheeple (family or not) give them away. A local storage locker comes to mind...but you know your situation better than anyone here :)

Hide in plain sight. Put in plain boxes and mark with "Winter Clothing" or "Books" or "Tax Returns/Bank Statements" or anything other than what's inside. Firearms can be hidden in stadium chair bags, fishing pole bags (give mad props to Golfroot for that one), etc. So on and so forth. Hide the items in plain sight and as innocently as you can.

If asked why the boxes are locked away? "Force of habit." "Don't want the kids tossing around the clean clothing" or "Don't want a thief getting into our bank statements" or "It gets cluttered up when we don't lock it away, so to keep it somewhat clean we lock the stuff in here" or whatever. Come up with a valid line that folks will more than likely accept and press on. Even if they open the door, all they see is "Bank Statements" on a box and press on.

Shoot, you could even joke about it. Say "I've got my zombie apocalypse survival arsenal in here" with a grin and open the door to show the "Tax Returns" and "Mister Coffee" boxes right out front. Cops would probably have a laugh and move on, nothing to see here.

Hiding in plain sight works pretty well. And if they are looking for a missing girl, I'm pretty certain the last place they are going to start looking is a small box that looks like tax records.

LOL @ Grand, but he's right. Hide in plain sight is the way to go, and always act as everything you are doing is exactly what should be done, whether it is, or not.

Check out my "fishing rod" case.

If you saw me with it, what would you assume I'm doing? Going fishing, maybe?

Here's what's inside, along with 8 25 round mags in the side pockets.

Nice bag golfroot. I actually made something similar out of a 3 raquet tennis bag for my AR. Sewed in reinforcement straps so it would hold the weight, elastics to hold 10 mags, pouches to hold 300 rds, 1" thick foam to protect the gun. Problem was that I had to separate the uppper from the lower for it to fit.

Boxes and hiding in plain sight will work for some things like ammo cans, but how do you hide 50 5gal pails?

I keep an old batbag of my younger brothers just for this.

When I travel with the shotgun, it goes in there, with a 34'' TPX as well. The end pockets hold a couple of boxes of shells and some .40 ammo. I even strap an old glove to handle just for kicks. I have never had to explain it but I think it looks better than a back seat full of goodies.

And thats a purty toy you got there golfroot!!!!
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

This is a good question. I bought some pails of grains, etc, and both the boxes on the pallet in my driveway, and the pails themselves, are proudly emblazoned "Emergency Essentials".

I consider that a packaging "fail" considering the target customer.

I had considered using a golf bag to carry "other sports items," but golf clubs are a high theft item from cars when parked. Perhaps the baseball bag would be less obvious and less of a target for theft.

I have one of those hard shell golf club carriers like you use on an airline. Every time i head out to shoot i pack my firearms in it to keep the nosey neighbors from knowing what i am doing.

Grand 58 is right. Hide your storeroom better if you cant/dont want to move it. i have one hidden behind a large book-case "door" (which is also locked). Unless you know it is there, you would not see it. Bookcases are classic, but i have also used a tool peg board mounted on some plywood as a 'door' too. lots of visual 'clutter' there, and metal to confuse simple minded metal detectors. nothing of course is fool-[U]proof[U] though.
