  • KATLA VOLCANO READY TO ERUPT

The Katla Volcano on Iceland is nearing eruption according to Scientists.

They claim the eruption will make the May 2010 eruption of nearby volcanoes look like a small dust storm in comparision.

So would we see the evidence of the eruption here in the US ?

Not immediately; the jet stream travels west to east, so we won't get any dust, ash, or anything until it circles the globe- call it 1-3 days minimum. It also really depends on if it is an explosive event like Mt. St. Helens or an eruption similar to the earlier Icelandic eruption. We didn't see much, if any 'fallout' from the eruption in May of this year, so unless it is MUCH larger I wouldn't be concerned.

Of course, I'm not a vulcanologist...... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express recently ;)

However, it will shut down air travel into Northern Europe for some time like the last one. So if any of your loved ones are over there, they will probably have to make additional plans for getting back to the States.

The last time the Katla Volcano blew was in 1918.

It spewed posionous gas and ash across Europe.

The poisonous gases made it as far as Ireland and Britian, killing many farm animals and civilians.

The Volcanic Ash was so intense then that it lowered the temperature by 2 % celcius the following winter.

The Mississippi River (FROZE OVER) as far south as New Orleans.

Crops suffered due to lower temperatures and reduced sunlight and growing seasons.

          Image if this happened now!!!!!!!!

The air traffic would be the least of our concerns if is spewed enough ash to effect growing seasons and lowered temperatures in this already tight food and fuel market.

That would be icing on the cake, after the year we have already had- the tornadoes, flooding; the last thing we need is a long hard winter and late spring to mess things up more.

Let's hope it is more in line with the more recent eruptions over there- a few days or even weeks of disrupted air travel are a small price to pay (unless you are trying to fly in Europe of course).
