I applaud the idea of carrying a .45 at all times as a general rule. However, there is no need to conceal a weapon in your own home. The simple truth of the matter is that when there's a knock on your door from an unidentified source, you really have no intel on the situation at first. The person knocking could be friendly or hostile, and you don't know how many buddies he or she has and where they all are, not to mention their intent or firepower. With that in mind, I take all the firepower I can comfortably use. Usually that means a 12 gauge loaded with slugs. I keep my front windows covered simply for privacy (I'm an introvert), but it also conceals my position and armament. Also, when you are gathering intel on your unexpected visitor(s), don't just stand behind the door and open it. Anyone who wants to hurt you can either use that opportunity to bust in the door, or just shoot through it because they know they will hit you. Instead, peek through your curtains from an angle and see who it is before you ever stand behind that door. That way you are in an unexpected position, you can easily size up the unidentified person(s), and you have a great firing position if need be. Should you start firing, there really isn't much cover for your target and you can see them very clearly. Instead of them 'charging the front gate', they've just been ambushed. You'll need some new windows, but that should be the least of your worries. If you have a dog, you get an added bonus in that the dog will most likely be barking and growling at the front door, which will distract the unknown persons while you ambush them from the side.
