  • Salt water and Septic Tanks

Does anyone know if you can use salt/brackish water to flush if you have a septic tank. I've googled it, and so far haven't found the answer.

If salt/brackish water won't ruin the septic tank, will it 'poison the soil' so that vegetation cannot grow?

I don't see why you couldn't, but poisoning the soil might be a side effect. I know the Septic tank area at dad's is one of the thickest greenest year round spots in the yard.

I haven't tried it, but since a septic system relies on bacteria to break down the waste material, it stands to reason that the normal bacteria would have problems surviving in a brackish tank.

My layman advice - don't do it unless an absolute emergency.
