  • Do you have obstacles between you and home (or your retreat)?

I have worked construction for all of my adult life, and as part of having to go where the work is i had to commuted to work. Because of the commute, i usually have to cross at least one body of water (river with a bridge) before i get home. Which was going to be at best a choke point.

What i did (my first plan) was to use blowup 3 man raft. What i planned was if i was at work and had to get home and the bridge was blocked. Go to a pre-picked area a little up current from where i wanted to land on the other side, leave my truck (disable), use a 12 volt compressor to fill the raft, load it and get to the other side and hoof it home.

Plans changed (years later) into using 2 tractor trailer inner tubes and attach a 4X8 piece of plywood on top (via pre drilled holes and zip ties) and hook a trolling motor to it, using the battery out of the truck to push it across. Using a 12 volt compressor to blow up the tubes.

Everything fit in the truck and was not suspicious. Keeping low key is important.

I was wondering if anyone else has any plans to over come obstacles to get home in an emergency.

I have one friend that works in a big city in the downtown area, that plans to abandon his car and use a canoe to get home. It is a 30+ mile trip, but he is young and in shape, current is with him. That way at least he is not fighting gridlock to get home. I have tried to convince him to put a trolling motor in his trunk, so that at least he could have a break (maybe an hour or more) on the trip home.

    Anyone else?
