  • Time multipliers

Everyone talks about force multipliers, but what about "time" multipliers. One of them that comes to mind, is trapping. I know you have to invest some time to do it, but trapping is something you can do to provide food for the family while you are doing something else. Another would be using gill nets, or yoyo fishing rigs, or jug (or limb) fishing.

There has to be other things that will work for you while you do other things

This reminds me of a John Wiseman video I saw. He put out a gill net, while foraging for veggies, while letting a solar water still work. If you add trapping to that, you will have a full day.

I did a post on both trapping and fishing methods. Things in the realm of hunting time saving is usually those things that are illegal that are that way because of their effeciency. A few examples rather than just going out and sitting are fire, drives, night vision, unplugging shotguns, "pot" shooting and year round hunting. In no way am I saying break the laws now but rather think about this after a breakdown. As I hunt I also forage, eating as i move or gathering for later. Build the shelter after the fire is going and heating a coal bed or cooking the days catch.
Farming/ranching/country life looks slow and easy but it's hard and has very little wasted motion and is a good example of time managment. They allow hay to dry while working another plot, grow in stages, apply medications while feeding or milking, hunt while plowing etc.

Good topic eeyore. Traps, trotlines and their ilk save many man-hours of labor.

The biggie that jumped to my mind is electricity. Having the ability to produce your own power, even if it a relatively small amount, can amount to a huge amount of saved labor & time. Solar, wind, geothermal or hydro-based systems are all viable options, depending on your locale.

oh when I saw time multipliers for some reason my old military mind went to increasing time for enemy on approach you know, ever increasing boulders diagonal along a road to shift a vehicle, wire rolled losely inside a tall grass field to make almost any tracked vehicle to tangle and lock up, physicaly barriers for foot soldiers --- first simple 3 strand barbwire fence, next layer a picket fence, next layer maybe a cyclone fence (chainlink fence), final layer privacy fence (wood or brick/stone). You get the picture increases the time for the enemy to reach you, which increases your ability to detect them sooner and dispatch them (errr eliminate the threat) at a safer distance... :)

Solar distilling. It takes a while, but not like you have to stand over a solar distiller and wait for it to work. Or actually, most heat operated distillers for that matter. I know filtering is the preferred method for drinking water, but distilling can be useful for water to be used in non-potable applications (cleaning, toilet, bathing, etc).

Solar ovens come to mind. In our household my GF does most of the cooking. If she can have a solar oven working in the morning and afternoon then that frees her up to help me in the garden. Not to mention the savings in fuel.
