Sheriff's deputies' disdain for Constitution captured by their own recorded comments
Personally, I believe that this is a pervasive problem. While I support the police and deputies, I don't believe officers realize that they are actually violating the Constitution. They deal with some real scumbags on a daily basis. They have watched as some attorney gets the guy released because of lack of evidence. The urge to blur the lines between what is Constitutional and what is not is a powerful temptation.
They also have a really good example of this happening on TV. On popular TV shows, the hero violates the Constitution regularily because he's being mocho and saving the heroine form dire harm.
The culture of our men in blue needs to change. From the top down.
This shows the attitude held by many young, not well supervised officers, that by gum I know what to do and I'm doing something. This guy was lucky he didn't get shot.
While I support our LEO's & associate with my local county Deputies, I'm very wary of some in our state & their "Us against Them mentality."
The best thing he could have done is immediately start asking for a lawyer. Don't even chit-chat with the Deputy. Don't answer any questions. They are trained to ask "Open Questions" such as What are you doing? Is there anything inside I should know about? Any contraband? Do like he did and say I don't authorize you to search anything. Keep protesting. But be as calm and polite as possible.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?
