an associate just returned from a developing african country.
the locals liked to see american dollars.
but they would check out any bill they rec'd.

if there was any marking on the bill.
such as a handwritten number such as "6500"
or a bank
stamp. (circle over N)
they would not accept it.
associate pressed the issue once trying to figure out why...
he was told that that maybe they would give him 2/3 or 3/4 value
but they did not want the bill.

have your bills hidden under the mattress got markings on them?

IMO they are avoiding or trying to counterfeits. I have run across this in other places who refused to exchange a bill for one reason or another evn though it came straight from a Military payroll.

I have run into this as well in a number of overseas countries. Like was said, they are trying to avoid counterfeits in one way. Plus to them, money that is marked up is not as valuable as a good clean crisp bill.

It all comes down to paper money is nothing more than a confidence game. Is it real or not? Once the populace loses confidence in it's authenticity then it ain't worth jack. It's amazing the number of stores and drive throughs that don't take 50s or 100s any more. You have a 100 dollar bill and need something from them you ain't got crap but a piece if paper with some numbers. Might as well be using monopoly money. After all that's all it is anymore isn't it?

They are changing the LOOK of cash so regularly any more... You have to remember to bring your old in every couple years and cycle it through for newer looking stuff.
