Southern Md. we were out of power for about 18 hours, lost some limbs and a few trees (to the wind) no problem with the shelters or animals (chickens ,ducks or the kids).
And as with most hurricanes, the weather the day after is usually beautiful... No disappointment. Enjoyed one of the best days of the year so far by doing a family hike up Blackrock Mtn. in the Shenandoahs and then doing another family hike through Thomas Jefferson's back yard... It has been a good day!
Saw lots of power trucks on I-64 heading WEST away from the storm area? Not sure what that means? Not needed? I don't know...
I'm glad that so far the storm reports are kinda light. Prays going out for everyone not checked in yet.
On a side note: We did a run to the local home improvement store yesterday for some roof coating. At the all you can eat buffet next door were 30-40 bucket trucks from Kansas City Power and Light. Also our local company sent 120 ppl to New Jersey.
Here in Rhode Island we got whacked. Two large walnut trees down close to the house and one fell on the house. Minimal damage thank God as Irene pushed it over ever so slowely. Three days w/out power was not a drag at all. All in all, we are lucky for some folks lost their lives.

Glad you all are alright. I'd be interested in hearing about the experience, preps and lessons learned when you get caught up

We had 9 "of rain and 70 + mille winds. We lost two trees and concider are selfs blessed that is all the damage we had. Many of our friends did not fair s well and are still with out power.
The experience was not bad and was even pleasant in some regards. The costant whine of neighbor's generators were a pain, but no intolerable. We had plenty of water onsite for bathing, plenty of food to eat and we always have a large supply of ice for such instances. Lessons learned: small, QUIET (opsec) generator would be useful to draw water from the artesian well and to keep the fridge cool. We did not lose any food, but after more than three days we would have.
