Me personally, I think if things dont "change" in Washington, we are less than 3 years away from an economic collapse. There are too many " blow up pool floats" keeping us afloat right now and when they run out of air, its sink time.
Depending on the region, I think its a natural disaster that will send some folks into TSHTF..........
I just keep truckin....You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

We are on a thin edge. The thing that has had me worried awhile now is I only saw some of these things such as the collapse of the middle class in foreign countries. Once it goes there is no point if return. The reset is hit and things change.
In spite of what i think about alot of politicians, bankers and string pullers they are really trying to keep it together because it's hitting them hard too. Not near as bad as the middle but it is now getting deep into their pocket books too for a change so the mad scramble is on.
I just dont know, keep preparing, keep praying and dont lose hope or sight of the goalKnowledge is Power, Practiced Knowledge is Strength, Tested Knowledge is Confidence

Things look pretty bleak, but don't obsess over it. That will make you crazy.
Take comfort in the fact that you are ready. Things are going to change, things always do change, the trick is to not let it get you down. Make sure your family is ready and try to help your other loved ones get ready. That's all any body can do.Pray for Obama, Psalms 109:8. Before you judge me, look it up.
I think my tin foil is too tight.

I don't have a crystal ball. But, congrats on your preps ! Anything/everything you do now will only put you that far ahead at a later time. Keep a broad spectrum approach to your prepping and an open channel to your higher power."Well, you know what they say: 'Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment. I think a lot of "how bad it gets" will depend on your geographical region and the type of collapse. An EMP or economic collapse? Coastal areas will be hit hard, as will any cities. Not that it won't be bad, but it will be easier for those who are accustomed to living with less and working hard for what they do have.

Keep on keeping on.... Life is a garden brother, dig it! LOL
But for real, what you are doing with your preps is just every day useful stuff. Keep that in mind.
Food? Eat it.
Water? Drink it, irrigate the garden or lawn with it, keep it as a reserve for fire fighting.
We need to focus on SOLUTIONS and not on the problem.
When we get too "problem oriented" we don't see the forest for the trees. Everything seems too large, everything may seem hopeless.
Do NOT prep in anticipation of "the big one" striking tomorrow, next week or even next year. Prep because it makes sense, is economically a smart move and is the responsible thing to do.
Prep for your wife, your kids.
Don't sell all your furniture to buy preps, but if your behind the curve, drop the $2K Disneyland vacation for a week camping and put the savings into preps.
To your question- it's really hard to say "we have never been this close" type of thing. "They" have pulled many a rabbit out of many a hat and "they" own the hat factory and we all know how rabbits breed. :)Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"
Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"
Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Emergencies aren't always big ones. The small ones are much more frequent and are still very dangerous. In all honesty, I'm not convinced that a major worldwide apocalyptic event is going to happen any time soon. But what I do know is that it isn't uncommon for a seemingly random region around the world to be suddenly struck with something devastating. Tsunamis, Earthquakes (not the lame east coast variety), Katrina, even uprisings like Libya or Syria are all things that do happen quite frequently. Those sorts of things are probably the most that you'll ever have to worry about. In the meantime, be prepared for the small stuff. Power outages, car breaking down, massive droughts, gas shortages, foreclosures, that sort of stuff.
I'll provide a link to my story of a very small emergency that I successfully prepped for. In retrospect, I could have been safer by just going to a hotel, waiting, and finding a mechanic. That said, my preparations allowed me to get myself out of a bad situation and still accomplish the mission of seeing my family for the first time in over five years.

1Admin beat me to it.
Buy a generator for a 3-day power outage. Stock up on ammo because the price is going up and you need lots of bullets to become a better shooter. Buy medical supplies and learn first aid because you are your own first responder. And so on and so forth...
Trying to do everything at once will scare your neighbors and make your head explode. In God we trust, everyone else bring data.

The short answer is..... as bad as we allow it to get. Not much of an answer, but it is the bottom line.
Like everyone else has said, just prep as best you can manage and continue to watch the events unfold; then you will be as ready as you can be regardless of WHAT happensBrokedownbiker

Changes always come and go, there have been so many civilizations that are now in the dust bin of history, take your pick. The U.S like all other nations is no exception to history, I think this country is headed for some serious trouble. The U.S has become an empire against the true intentions of what the founders had in mind, bloated, fat, arrogant, self-indulgent, etc. Every time a nation or civilization reaches prosperity and luxury, corruption will be born so there after, this never last. Would like flush all the liberal and neo-con trash that has caused much of this mess and move to the next chapter for the U.S and the West, if there is to be a next chaper.
The question is what comes next?

Excellent question. I can say that because I have asked the same question many times.;) I am relatively new to prepping and it makes it hard for me sometimes trying to figure out what I am prepping for. However I have been closely following news and politics for many years and the thing that concerns me most is the economic situation. With all of the major world economies so closely linked together now when one falls the others are going to go down like dominoes and I think that puts us in a much worse situation than the great depression. Where things go from there is anybody's guess!Be informed NOT indoctrinated!

I agree with Deep Operator. Serious trouble. Whether it comes on quickly as in a economic collapse or a long slow decline, I believe that we will see conditions like pre- and post-collapse Russia. We will eventually devolve to the rough conditions like some areas of Romania. Shortages of food, fuel, and other things we take for advantage now. And with that, there will be violence. I'm not hopeful at all.

The simple fact is, if we spend more than we take in, at some point we lose. It doesn't matter if its a family that doesn't budget or a government. Our government has been spending like a there is no tomorrow and we have reached our end (economically). I don't know if the damage already done to our economy is reversible or not, but it dosen't look good. If a new admininstration does what's necessary to get our economy back on track it will hurt a lot of people and take a long time. The only way a government can generate revenue is through taxation, I don't personally know anyone who is ready to start paying more.
Unemployement is rising, the cost of goods are rising, the government is out of money. We've had billions of dollars of damage on the east coast alone, FEMA is broke. Gas is at an all time high and going up.
Without even considering terrorist attacks, zombies, etc... I think the next three years will be an experience we as a nation may not recover from for a long time. Keep preparing for the worst and hope for the best.
