  • Fall Hunting

We are just a week and half out from opening day of dove season and the kick off of the fall hunting. I love this stuff!!!
I implore everyone to get out and use those fancy weapons, all that joe cool gear and work them honed ninja tactics on things that see, smell and hear better than you. Don't be afraid to get out of the stand, away from the feeder set to go off at 0900 so you dont have to get up early and match skills more than 1/4 mile away from the comfort of those heated pickup seats and breathe non filtered crisp fall air.
It's time to practice skills like plant reconition. If you hunt deer they eat around 70 wild plants alone in this state so what are they? Good time to learn and figure out which ones you share as well. Work them campfire skills and try a fire straw or charcloth method. Break in them new brand name boots and see if they are waterproof while harvesting a catail and tasting something new.
Next month don't worry about that electronic water proof zombie perimeter alarm and ask yourself what that squirel is barking at or that covey of quail just busted up for.
Remember that meat doesnt come from styrofoam and that satisfaction can come from sore muscles and tired but happy children who never grow weary of exploring are precious moments that will soon slip away to the bustle of life. Enjoy the laughter of friends and the things we do to include our own misadventures of the wild while muddy and soaking wet.
Go hunting and be careful because you just might bag your true spirit so often lost in life and maybe just maybe bring something else home besides a freezer full of meat!

I miss those days of scouting before opening day. I am mostly house bound anymore but still have the memories of walking the fields and woods. Improving my woodmanship skills as I scouted preseason to try and figure out game movement. I seldom did not get my limit, deer, elk or other game on opening day.

Matt is right, get out there, learn and enjoy. Old age will get here a lot faster then you think. Don't put it off thinking you will do it later. Take the time now and get in that woods. Make the memories that you will miss if you do not.

I gotta get a longer barrel for the Shotgun....I REALLY want to go hunting this year and learn that craft. My farmer freinds' lil brother lives near me and knows of a Duck honeyhole.....Only went deer hunting once in my life when I was 15 and thought it was a waste of time....but I enjoyed the hike in at 4am and the ride home....didn't enjoy field dressing as a teen......

Nowadays, I have been to the farm during "clean up time" so I am now used to the fun!

Over the last year I have been wanting to get my hunting license and go. I dont have a rifle yet, but I want to go. Any bird. Maybe deer if I can use a rifle, I dont want to tear one up to bad with a shotgun. My buddy tells me I have to drink the blood of my first kill.......RAWR!!!!

But, if anyone out there gets themselves an Elk and is wants to be generous with a chunk or two......wink wink..............:)

I cook them the same but I also like them fried much better. I like the zataran breading and some head country seasoning mixed in. I also got some smoked paprika from the Omnish folks I cant wait to try in there as well. I'm gonna do my quail this yr with that too.
We have Bow startin 1oct till mid jan, youth middle weekend in oct, muzzleoader right after that in which I have all 9 days off (so you all will get a break from my incesent spamming) and gun is the week of thanksgiving, couple of extra weekends for does as well but I never need them, i'm always maxed out.
Just think of them muley as post paw fodder:) !

Yep went out last Friday morning and did some scouting. Say some does & fawns but no legal bucks. Looking forward to hunting with the .20 ga. smoothbore muzzleloader. No better way to get in shape than to walk crosscountry for several miles. Try using your bob and other equipment.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

and paint your face with the blood in a ceremony honoring the deer Tslagi, even my forefathers who denied our bloodline still upheld the honoring of the spirit.
While some may find this barbaric or even just silly it's a way of teaching that killing has deep meaning and is not to be taken lightly. Animals are not people for all you lefties reading this in horror but they ARE worthy of honor and being dominate does not lessen our responsibility.
BTW shotgun slugs are awesome for putting them down in a hurry. I love shotgun hunting an some public lands only allow for them and archery with no rifles. It will show you the true capabilities of that short barrelled scattergun in combat if you use it.

                    I figured one of these slugs could drop one.....I may have to try that but without any sights, I will have to put in my good eye. ;}

I can't wait ,squirel hunting is a great way to get ready for deer season if you can walk through the woods with out disterbing the squirels the deer have no clue you are there.

Yes. I can't wait! I did some rabbit hunting back in March and made some notes of the various deer signs in the fields I'll be hunting in November. A slug will put down a deer in a hurry, it just hurts to sight the gun in! Four or five shots and I'm done for a few days.

They have lead sleds to help sighting in your shotguns and heavy kicking guns. They work and make sighting in your guns so much easier.

Might also try a thin foam pillow between your gun butt and shoulder. I use to have one that helped a lot before I got a lead sled.

I'll have to try the foam pillow thing. Thanks!
