I have been stock piling nickels for over a year. I don't figure how I can lose money on nickels and you don't have to go through the rolls. I tried getting rolls of quarters from the bank and going through them. I went through two boxes of quarters ($500/box each) and did not find a single pre 1965 coin! Hope that some of you have better luck with your treasure hunt. All though, I have had good luck trading weapons I didn't want for 90% silver coins locally.

so far this yr, I've found one silver quarter, one dime, two war nickles and one indian head penny, silver is getting scarse, I hand sort bricks of coins everyday, and save pre 82 copper pennies.

I have found the "golden" dollars in there before and laughed because my machines do not exceopt them, they eat them. oops my gain. I found no 1964 dimes this week but I did find 2 1964 nickles. I got so excited until I researched on the web and found out that nickles are not silver, and except for a short period in the 40's they never have been. They are a composite of nickle and cooper. I found an interesting site and would like to know what you and others think of this as a way to get started.

I would really like to get ya'lls opinion on this. It doesn't seem like a bad idea to collect and store as many nickles as you can, what is there to loose?
I have a few nickles, probably a couple hundred dollars, but they're saying save them in 30 cal ammo cans, so if a person was to buy 30cal cans at 18 dollars ea with postage to store nickles, where would his profit be, coppers pennies will be the metal to store and it's thought that the government will lift the ban on scraping them eventually and copper is around four dollars a pound. My eight hundred dollars worth of pre 82 pennies are worth about sixteen hundred scrap value. He's right, they're bulky, but it's east to store them in the boxes they come in out in a corner of the garage on a small pallet.

I went through 14 rolls of dimes and found nothing older than 1965. Because I deal with so much coin every week I figure it can't hurt to check them. I am going to keep all of the nickles I get. I was wondering about saving pennies. It's another thing that can't hurt to save. Why the pre-1982 pennies? Is the cooper content different?

To some people saving nickles and dimes may seem like a waste of time when gold and silver prices are rising so fast. However I can not afford to buy silver/gold and add to my food storage and the other prepping items (alt cooking methods, meds etc). If it turns out that saving nickles and pennies are a waste of time, at least right now I have the peace of mind that I am at least trying to secure some form of tradeable currency for our uncertain future.

The only problem with saving the nickels is that in order to separate the metals requires a more complex process than just melting them.

Pre-1982 pennies are far easier to melt and separate the metals....pre-'82 pennies have more copper than post-'82 pennies.

This is my understanding of what I have read....if I am wrong please correct me. I stopped saving nickels but have kept on looking for pre-'82 pennies and pre-'65 dimes (still have yet to find any of these).

I hit the jackpot! Found someone with a small coin collection and bought a bunch of mercury dimes and old Australian coins. I used coinnews.net to calculate their value. It is a pretty useful site to help add up your values. My track record on searching rolls isn't as good, but I will continue seeing how it doesn't cost me anything except time.

I have been lucky. I have been through 32 rolls of dimes now and I have found 3 silver dimes. I figure that's not to bad. I'll keep looking. I hope you all have good luck finding silver coins, no matter how you fond them.
