  • Grand Rant - Our National Symbol:

I was at the local gun show this weekend moseying around looking at overpriced guns, ammo and stuff. I came across a guy selling flags, bumper stickers and other patriotic memorabilia. I've been looking at buying a Gadsden Flag for some time now and I figured I'd at least check the price. Ask the guy the price...$40 for the 3x5. Okay, now next trick question, where's it made?

    "China."

"Thanks and have a nice day," I say and prepare to move on since I know darn well that flag didn't cost $40 out of a Chinese factory and sure as shooting either him or the distributor is making a killing on the profit.

"No, now wait a minute! If you're one of these folks that doesn't believe in buying things made in China, I've got a buddy over there who says the factory workers are darn glad to have a job and it puts food on the table and a roof over their heads. And it's decent quality too. You can't find an American made flag for that price."

"You had better believe I can on the net," I inform him and was getting the patriotic beast from within ready to be unleashed.

But before I was able follow up with some choice words describing his business principles, he was requested by another dealer and informed me if I had any other questions to stick around. I didn't stick around as you can imagine and left before I could tell him where to stick his attitudes about keeping a Chinese worker in a job. I don't think he would have appreciated or understood the scene I would have made and I probably would have been thrown out. But anyway, the one thought on my mind after he said that was:

"What about that American worker that made patriotic flags and was able to put food on the table and a roof over their families head until that factory closed and moved to China which put him out of a job?"

I know this is only a selected member of society, however, many Americans could care less about putting an American worker out of a job if it comes down to their wallet. We are selling our national soul to the cheaply made imported goods and the corporate bottom line. I'm sorry, but I firmly believe if any product out there on the market should be made in America, it must be American flags and produced by Americans. It's a pretty simple thing you know? It's just our national symbol that's now been sent overseas because someone wanted to make a buck or two more. I was astounded an American businessman would defend a Chinese worker making our National Symbol he happened to be selling (at close to the same prices I can get an American made flag).

And attempting to do it at a gun show that's typically filled with conservatives who are very patriotic? That's some major cajones he has there.

I mean, am I way off base here in thinking this guy was off his rocker and shocked he would act this way towards a potential sale? I can hardly find the words to describe my disgust with what he was doing. "Hey, it's okay to put an American worker out of a job because it gives a Chinese worker a job." That's pretty much what he was saying as I understand it.

Maybe I was just cranky that day (as the prices at the show sucked and I didn't find anything I liked or wanted) but I just couldn't believe the audacity of a businessman selling American flags made in China and defending Chinese workers! But no, it's been a couple of days now and I'm still pretty heated about it.

Just wanted to rant a little bit about idiots that think it's perfectly fine to put an American out of a job.

Then I imagine that "China-Mart" should chap your butt too. There are very few things sold there that are made in America. Not to mention how many small businesses have gone out of business because of Walmart coming in and under-cutting prices by selling their "import crap".

I try my best to vote with my wallet by keep on driving and spend my hard earned dollars with the local feed and seed store or mom and pop bakery. Just my $.02. Soapbox is offically passed to the next person.

Most people "sacrifice the immediate on the alter of the long term". It took an illustration for my wife to start to understand it.

We had a local hardware store, mom and pop type place. She would not go there to buy the same thing that you could get a Home Depot, because it was a buck more. I tried to get her to understand, it helps to have something close, but to help them stay in business. It was not until the store went under did she understand that it was very convenient to have them there, but as important was it was a local company. Empty stores are bad for the neighborhood.

But to the point it needs to be extrapolated out to a National level, most people i know are willing to work for a living and don't want hand outs, just a fair shake.

I totally agree the Tomahawk I recently bought was made in MO by an American Craftsman...sure I could have bought one cheaper..but I really wanted a good ole american workers hatchet...me and the wife have since stopped going to Walmart unless its absoutely necessary...we have started shoping at Fry's for food and look at all the labels before purchase...tired of my hard earned dollars going overseas and Grand58742 I totally agree with you on the Flag..our Symbol...want it American Made

I fly an American flag made by Perma-Nyl, and a Culpeper made by Annin, both American companies. We do a fair amount of our shopping at Sams and Walmart, but at least the profits are staying in the US. Not like IKEA. In this day and age, it's hard to tell which US manufacturers are actually building product in the USA. GE is a perfect example.

please, whatever! I'll bet everything I own that more than 75% of what you own is foreign made. Blame Bush for tax cuts for foreign companies while you head to walmart to buy the goods made in china because they're cheaper and then complain about american jobs on your way home.

HAHA, I never said I wasn't guilty of the same crimes. Took me over an hour to find a pair of freakin socks that was made in the USA and I still had to settle for a company where most of them were made in india, izod I think it was.

I'm not so much trying to point fingers as I am trying to enlighten folks. The point is more so that we as consumers look for the best bargain which happens to be foreign 99 out of 100 times. This country is a nation of consumers and service. Why is the GDP so low, because the majority won't pay the price of union wages and the salaries that American's wages demand for goods. Do you see the catch 22? So are you gonna pay for the jobs and wages you shout about or let the industry go to China? CHina can't touch us because we are the consumer of their products. U.S. exports little to nothing anymore let alone supply to our own.

I hear ya DogofWar...it's so hard these days with no raises, rising costs of stuff to not go cheap and shop at wally world. And I'm sure even though it says made in USA it's probably imported. We are consumers and we consume alot....and sometimes I think alot of this is our own fault...I think we have become lazy as a society and don't want to do mundane tasks or work in a factory because we should all have high paying office jobs and not dirty our hands...not trying to offend anyone out there....and I think our govt has allowed to much to leave this country. So having said that we really do try to keep looking for reliable made USA products...believe me you really gotta look hard..they also tend to be more expensive

I will be completely honest, we shop and Target and Publix and I dont care if the goods were made by midgets on mars, we buy it if the cost is right. The only things we buy there is food, home goods and some clothes but on one income (recently my Weekly Stipend) we gotta get it where we can get it, ya dig? We try to buy American when we can, but we are just trying to make it to the next week at this time and have been doing this for the last 2 years waiting on TLW to finish school and start holding up her end of the seesaw. I would love to buy All American but at this time its just not realistic if the price isnt right. I do boycott Wally World though, and thats a fact. The only time we go there is to buy our Filters for our small aquarium and I like their camping section.....oh and also for Bullets, but thats it. I hate that store and everything it represents. But if you were to go in the 4 locations that are in my 40 mile vicinity, you can get some hellacious laughs...like peopleofwalmart.com laughs...especially on Friday nights around 7pm, after all the paychecks and "benefit" checks have been cashed.....
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

well I would hope theirs nothing wrong with getting your hands dirty because thats the last time this country was making progress. Today CHina owns 1/3 of our debt and they are in an industrial revolution. Can it get any clearer than that?
