  • Is this the 21st century soup kitchen?

During the Great Depression of the 1930's millions of people relied on the "Soup Kitchen" to survive. Today, one in seven Americans lives on food stamps.

Are food stamps today's soup kitchen?

I think if food stamps had been given out during the depression people would have bought real food, not the processed, convience crap many buy with their EBT cards!

I might be talking out my *** here but I think the soup kitchens were privately run - I know Al Capone had some in Chicago

Food stamps is a government bureaucracy

Blowmax, you are correct they were run many times by churches. In today's world though, the handouts seem to be coming more frequently from Uncle Sam and less from private sources.

And I think that is a major problem of the modern society - people have become programmed to think that the government will always be there to save them if there is a problem

One day those EBT cards might stop working and those people will have no idea what to do

Oh, I think I know exactly what they will do, or more to the point, what they may try to do. The question RIGHT NOW is, what are we doing to get people ready, even those who would turn against us?
