  • Unofficial "The COLONY" thread...

Season 2 of The COLONY starts next week on Discovery, so let's get the bashing and correcting thread going now...

First off, I'll share my thoughts on last season... I have to admit, I learned a few things from that season. When I saw the trailers, I thought, "OMG, they gotta be kidding!" But eventually I got sucked in and learned, among other things, how to degassify wood into a combustable gas that can run a gasoline-powered engine. I confess I didn't know how to do that... I will admit it was worth the time to watch...

That said, as most of us here know, the way that scenario was put together, one would more likely win the lottery than bump into an abandoned warehouse so well equipped with stuff. Sure, they made it look grungy, but that warehouse had some stuff in it... VALUABLE stuff. Every episode they kept finding more and more nuggets of survival value... Convenient! Too much so for real life SHTF.

Also, it seems that some were placed to make events come about in a certain way, a way that would make good TV, but I will admit it had it's real life moments, as faking a passing of a kidney stone is not easy to do. But that is TV...

I have no clue what to expect this season... I will be DVR'ing it, and will watch it, so what say you?

I'm probably the only household in America that doesn't have cable/Dish. Maybe a brief update weekly would be helpful if you so desire.
Protecting the sheep from the wolves that want them, their family, their money and full control of our Country!

Guns and gear are cool, but bandages stop the bleeding!

ATTENTION: No trees or animals were harmed in any way in the sending of this message, but a large number of electrons were really ticked off!

      NO 10-289!

We are the other one ;)

I bought the DVD's for the first season. It had the "reality TV" feel to it and honestly, we watched about 10 minutes of it together and my wife begged me to turn it off. Now this isn't because she's not into this, it's because of the cat fat drama that usually ensues on those types of shows. I've watched a little bit on my own and would likely buy the 2nd season on DVD whenever it comes out, if I ever finish the first season!

Yes updates would be awesome for us TV challenged types :)
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Granted, the drama of personality conflicts that these shows revolve around is there, but in some ways it is not that different from what one would have to deal with if one was an unprepared sheeple that bumped into that warehouse with 10 other people you don't know, nor have ever met. There will be conflicts, power struggles, victors and the defeated... The big difference, I think it would be even more intense, confrontive and even violent between "The Group" due to the reality of it hitting home. It will not be like the show where in the back of their mind they know it is ALL FAKE and soon they will go home. No, it will be REAL... I think that season gave a glimpse into the conflicts ANY GROUP will have, even a squared-away group with a strong leader and command structure.

But the interesting stuff, the stuff I learned from, mainly from the science/inventor guy, wasn't until half way through and to the end... The beginning and first half was a joke...

As for this season, looking at some of the clips and previews, they would not last a week in a REAL SHTF virus event... I saw one clip where one guy was "negotiating" with an angry mob about how much supplies he would give them if they went away. A man of an UNARMED group, surrounded by superior numbers of mob looters, just told them they have MORE stuff by saying "You're not getting it all..." Nothing worse than waving food in front of a wolf pack... It would have been over that day...

The bios of the participants don't leave me much hope that this season will offer anything I can learn from... I don't see anyone like that gray-haired, hippie-type inventor guy of last season that impressed me so. A few "construction workers," which are useful, but no inventor / creator brains as far as I can see. I see they build a windmill... Whoopeeee! We'll see how it all lays out... but I don't have much hope for this season. Looks like a version of Survivor so far...

The premier episode had me laughing in disbelief, like when they all freaked out about a snake in their building, mashing it so much that it was useless for food, and grimacing as the power of "The Mob," the huddled masses that will roam TEOTWAWKI, quickly and easily overpowered all of them and took all their medical supplies and boiled water stash. In reality, I think they all would have been either killed or severely beaten, possibly raped, and "The Mob" would have taken everything and set up their base there.

The lessons of the first episode: Have lots of semi-auto firearms, trained shooters, and lots of ammo with defined SECURITY protocols right from the beginning, not after they set up camp and explore... Secondly, COMMUNICATIONS! They spent most of their time running around yelling for each other when a threat suddenly appeared... Then all confusion hell broke out... Funny if it wasn't so serious of a lesson.

For those unable to watch, I will very briefly run down the events:
            1. Dropped off into a "secure area" that had about 1 week of food and a large tent with cots. 10 acre area was either burned out, destroyed, or stripped out, less the stuff left for them to find.
            2. A mix of hard workers, some brains, some emotional pansies, and one lazy dude that pi$$e$ everyone off...
            3. Their priorities are good: establish safe shelter, make safe drinking water, explore for useful materials, but they neglected SECURITY and defined defenses.
            4. Except for pipes and sticks, they are weaponless.
            5. Their first contact with outsiders begins the "negotiate with them" strategy and hope they leave and never come back. Their good intentions were met with conflict and a fight that put two of their strongest into "isolation" after contact with the unwashed masses.
            6. That good act then brought "The Mob" back to take more goods that they confessed to the strangers that they had.
            7. For a FAKE EVENT, the conflict between "The Mob" and "The Colony" was very physical and several got hurt. Many had pepper spray in their faces by The Mob. Lots of hand-to-hand wrestling but The Colony was eventually overwhelmed and The Mob took all their medical supplies and boiled water. The Mob left victorious, they got exactly what they were told to get by the producers. They also promised to be back for the rest of their stuff.
            8. The Colony is depressed, angry and scared... All attempts to "avoid the infected" with suits, masks and isolation afterwards was thrown out the window as unworkable.

Next episode shows The Mob coming back and they have some explosives and it sounds like a firearm as well, as a gun shot is heard. A building is burned and more looting by The Mob. The Colony seems to be overwhelmed and scared... They admit that they have nothing to stop The Mob...

I have watched only a couple of the Colony shows, I was not real impressed. I am not perfect and do not know everything but they did things that I thought were quite stupid.
