  • When do you abandon your post- Additional Question

I wanted to ask an additional question to Monkeybirds thread without hijacking it.

If you work in the EMS, Fire, Police, Medical or related field, would you take anything with you as you left?

I'm talking a complete breakdown with no chance of facing charges (nation wide emp event, etc...)

If you would, what would it be and why?

Would you feel guilty about it or not?

    Yes and no.

If it is a EMP, then only the IV supplies, drugs, fluids and anything non-electrical will go. Without a working rig, it will be a sitting duck for looters and other issues. The drugs and fluids with IV's could be used to assist so many for a while. The stretcher will be interesting since most stretchers are now powered with hydraulics and a lithium battery and touch button controls. There is still alot of good that could be done with those supplies. (PS, every so often when a ambulance is changed or swapped out, we have races as to how quickly you can "strip" a rig. I can attest that the record where I am, is around 3 minutes. And that was with 2 people.)

If a society break down or collapse, then everything goes or as much as can be carried. The monitor can be used at other places and other times, so basically all the equipment will go.

Would I feel guilty? No. I know that the equipment at that point maybe spread thin due to calls for aid and service.

I look at it this way. I am here as a public servant, those supplies are for us to use for the good of mankind/public. That equipment in the wrong hands can and would easily do harm to a non-trained person. In the hands of a trained person, they can make it so someone lives. Who knows, the life you save, maybe your own, family or your kids.

Before I retired, I posed this very question to myself. The answer was "yes" I would. Bandages, tape, syringes, antihistimine drugs, various medical supplies that I could put into a bag and carry out. I figured with everything being shut down, I could use the medical supplies to help my neighbors and my family.

Yes. Just like in the walking dead series on AMC when the Deputy wakes up in the end of the world, first thing he does is goes and raids the police station for anything he can carry.

This is one area that might be a blessing. Where I work we still run one non-electric diesel ambulance. It might just be the biggest POS I've ever worked out of. It it's a true this is the end event then it's my ticket home (30miles). The equipment, or at least the narcs, will be raided within the 1st two days so yes I would take them. Add in the couple of hundred pounds of BLS supplies, 9 "M" and "H" o2 cylinders, and books I'll end up with a truck load.

            Yes

Weapons, food, water, med supplies, fuel, TP, whatever

No, in the event of total breakdown there are 2 catagories. Them that take care of themselves and them that get taken care of (and i don't mean that in a nice way)
Whats the difference in these fields and any others? Supplies are supplies. Someone who works at a drug store, convienance store, water treatment plant, chicken farmer, martial arts studio, pizza place, janitors closet etc is gonna have better stuff than a cop car! Back when i was a small town cop they gave me a shirt, a shared car with a part timer, an 870 shotgun and a badge everything else was mine to include the shotgun shells in the 870 and the road flares in the trunk. The shotgun was so gummed up that it wouldnt pump all the way back and I had to clean and fix it. I had to get a tire from an old retired cruiser to replace one that was balding. So yes i would take the stuff, but truth was my family car was in better shape than my cruiser.

Absolutely..I am not leaving that stuff so tweekers and looters can take it an use it against other people...
