  • CONgress LIED!

Folks, this letter says it all. We have been played, once again, by our politicians. Thankfully, we have a few Statemen left to tell the truth. Everyone of my CONgress critters that voted for this bill will not be receiving a vote from me during their next election cycle. I would encourage you to do the same. If this doesn't get you fired up, well I don't know what will. If you think that this is only one elected official saying something like this, then look at my next thread I started entitled More Statemen Needed.

Open Letter: Why I Oppose the Debt Ceiling Compromise

    Aug 1, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today Sen. Rand Paul issued an open letter on the subject of the debt ceiling compromise facing the Senate. Below is that letter.

To paraphrase Senator Jim DeMint: When you're speeding toward the edge of a cliff, you don't set the cruise control. You stop the car. The current deal to raise the debt ceiling doesn't stop us from going over the fiscal cliff. At best, it slows us from going over it at 80 mph to going over it at 60 mph.

This plan never balances. The President called for a "balanced approach." But the American people are calling for a balanced budget.

This deal does nothing to fix the overreaches of both parties over the past few years: Obamacare, TARP, trillion-dollar wars, runaway entitlement spending. They are all cemented into place with this deal, and their legacy will be trillions of dollars in new debt.

The deal that is pending before us now:

•Adds at least $7 trillion to our debt over the next 10 years. The deal purports to "cut" $2.1 trillion, but the "cut" is from a baseline that adds $10 trillion to the debt. This deal, even if all targets are met and the Super Committee wields its mandate - results in a BEST case scenario of still adding more than $7 trillion more in debt over the next 10 years. That is sickening.

    •Never, ever balances.

•The Super Committee's mandate is to add $7 trillion in new debt. Let's be clear: $2.1 trillion in reductions off a nearly $10 trillion,10-year debt is still more than $7 trillion in debt. The Super Committee limits the constitutional check of the filibuster by expediting passage of bills with a simple majority. The Super Committee is not precluded from any issue, therefore the filibuster could be rendered moot. In addition, the plan harms the possible passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment. Since the goal is never to balance, having the BBA as a "trigger" ensures that the committee will simply report its $1.2 trillion deficit reduction plan and never move to a BBA vote.

•It cuts too slowly. Even if you believe cutting $2.1 trillion out of $10 trillion is a good compromise, surely we can start cutting quickly, say $200 billion-$300 billion per year, right? Wrong. This plan so badly backloads the alleged savings that the cuts are simply meaningless. Why do we believe that the goal of $2.5 trillion over 10 years (that's an average of $250 billion per year) will EVER be met if the first two years cuts are $20 billion and $50 billion. There is simply no path in this bill even to the meager savings they are alleging will take place.

Buried in the details of this bill is the automatic debt limit increase proposed a few weeks ago. The second installment of the debt ceiling increase is initiated by the President automatically and can only be stopped by a two-thirds vote of Congress. This shifts the Constitutional check on borrowing from Congress to the President and makes it easier to raise the debt ceiling. Despite claims to the contrary, none of the triggers in this bill include withholding the second limit increase.

Credit rating agencies have clearly stated the type of so-called cuts envisioned in this plan will result in our AAA bond rating being downgraded. Ironically then, the only way to avoid our debt being downgraded and the resulting economic problems that stem from that is for this bill to fail.

This plan does not solve our problem. Not even close. I cannot abide the destruction of our economy, therefore I vigorously oppose this deal and I urge my colleagues and the American people to do the same.

    Sincerely,

    Rand Paul, M.D.
    United States Senator

The sad thing is that by the time a majority of the congress agrees with Rand Paul, the economy may already be OVER that cliff!

If you ran your family budget like congress runs the country's budget you would lose your home have your cars repossessed and have to file for bankruptcy.

Hence their approval rating is so low (below 20%).
But in all honesty, BHO is helping make sure they're irrelevant anyway.

            @elittle,

I've been waiting to hear about Fox News or someone going and finding that stupid chic that said that and interviewing her to find out she's probably lost her house/rental, probably is in worse shape than when she made her "he will take care of me" speech.

TU - that was the story i was referring to.

I don't want the Government to subsidize my student loan interest nor my mortgage interest!!! There I said it! Stop with all the handouts!!

Flat Income Tax Rate - everyone pays no one quits (play on words from a movie, can you name the movie?)
5% if income is less than $50K
7% if income is less than $100K
10% if income is greater than $100K

the only way your income tax could be lower is if you invest into a 401K, because you would be taxed as you withdrew money from it.

If they would tax the 49% that didn't pay any taxes (how about they pay their "fair share") and go to a simpler system, the above system would get rid of 90% of the IRS. You could do your taxes on a piece of notebook paper, sorry about the CPA's but I am sure with their head for numbers they could find another job.

Ok you can blast some holes in my plan...don't worry I have thick skin :)

The only hole I see is with the CPA's. Most will still be employed with corporations to figure out what their gross and net profits are so they will have an idea what to pay.

LOL I get so sick of the government hand out programs for the lazy.
I graduate in two more school days from Pharmacy Technician training.
Thank GOD because I am so sick of seeing the lazy, freeloading, and cheaters in this college.

But today we had our externship meeting and loan repayment mandatory briefing. I am not part of the loan repayment program, but they said it was federal law that I attend the briefing anyway (highly doubtfuly, but they are lazy administrators just like the majority of students).

People were in the classroom getting CHECKS from the school for the government overpaying their tuitioon, do these people have to pay it back? Maybe I don't know and would never trust them with paying me back $20 for gas. But what pisses me off is a huge portion of them will NEVER even make their education program part of their career, they will get sick of it and quit, they will NOT pay their student loans and just let the government deduct it out of their unearned income credit (which technically isnt their money anyway, so why do they care).

One girl sitting in the table in front me commented on that she got almost $5,000 from the government to take the classes because of her zero income (freeloading off of mom and dad at 26 years of age) but that money is being used for her upcoming wedding, because through Texas and a partial payment from her father's GI Bill she owed the school NADA! And yes the federal government, even though tuition was already paid, gave her a freaking check every month (according to her) adding up to $5,000 over the last 5 months.

Why the hell is MY tax money going to freeloaders people like this that seem to always be able to "cheat" the system?

Havent been on the site for a long time (going to school and working a new job, soon two jobs) but when I logged in and saw this I just had to "vent" a little... Maybe we do need to go bankrupt as a nation so we can RESET???

All civilizations rise, rule, decline and fall. Most of us have lived through the tail end of the "Rule" part, and now happen to be living through the decline, and may see the fall. There is nothing really to be upset about, as long as your are prepared for it; it is a natural process, the trick is to not get caught up in everyone else s panic, and the governmental reaction.

I think that many folks here feel that's where the country is headed - for a "Reset". Unfortunately, I don't think the masses of moochers will just quietly accept the gov't nipple being yanked from their mouths.
