  • Preparedness Commercials

As much as I complain about the gubmint I do have to give props to FEMA (please read the rest before you blast me) for at least putting together a commercial about being prepared for emergencies (mostly weather related but you have to start somewhere). So I have to give them credit for at least trying to get people to make a basic kit.

Has anyone else seen these commercials?

There's not a person on the coast that wouldn't prepare if there was a hurricane coming. So it only makes sense to broaden that kind of preparedness out to a national level. I'm with you giving them credit. By the way, the government book; "Are You Prepared" from FEMA is a good gubmint pub especially for just starting out. www.ready.gov or 1-800-be-ready......... I am not a paid spokesman........

Here in FL, we get all sorts of state commercials about preparing for weather, many of which were made while JEB! was governor.
They are great because they go as far as to tell everyone exactly what to expect from a government response which is basically, we don't care if you don't have anything to eat until we've secured the area, and prepped infrastructure for recovery.
In the commercials, they even go as far as to say 'have at least 72 hours worth of non-perishable food'. Problem with FL is population turnover, a lot of people who were here in '04 are gone, and there's a lot more here who weren't.

and I second elittle's statement about Katrina!

Claymore should have said that "There's not an educated person..."

As part of my medical schooling I am required to attend major public events like community fairs, health fairs and such. Recently at a major BBQ competition/city fair FEMA actually had a decent sized stand where they where giving out booklets on preparedness. I stopped, pretended that I didn't know anything, asked couple of questions. They actually mentioned that the 3 day preparedness they recommend is the minimum since they would not be able to predict how long it would be before they could take charge. So why, I asked do you say 3 days? They replied that it's better than nothing.
                  I guess they're right.
