I have read in many survival books about avoiding cotton and other material in cold weather, what my question is though is military GI socks are not wool which it seems like everybody recommends? so what is the right answer? I would like to stock up on socks for preparedness and thought GI socks would be the best but this does not seem to jive with what everybody says

It would be something you would have to try for yourself I would think. Everyone has different needs and likes. I wore them for 20yrs and the compositon did change 3 times that i know of with 2 colors. I hated them but it's what was mandated. the socks i have now by far are better for me.Originally posted by jmsneorrcom View Postit says it is a Wool / nylon / cotton-blend materialKnowledge is Power, Practiced Knowledge is Strength, Tested Knowledge is Confidence

wool was the main source back in the day because it wicks moisture away, AND has the ability to insulate when wet
cotton fails on both those tests
I would look for a high quality synthetic if you are in a cold environment (look at mountain climbing catalogs to get ideas).
Just a suggestion: when faced with a purchase dilemma I think who uses that the most in a ciritical situation, for you, mountain climbers.
For another item, it may be fisherman, you get the picture. Check out their catalogs, they often have "informative sections" in them just for people like us that are learning. =)

I personally swear by Fox River. I typically buy them direct from the site. No financial interest here, but just a loyal customer.Originally posted by elittle View PostI too have heard that merino wool is the WOOL to get. Don't suppose you have any good suppliers?

cottons are ok. in hot weather, but take longer to dry out and really suck in cold temps. which is why they say dont use cotton........ but for a do all a high nylon/spandex blend or merino/spandex blend is best imho.
I use smart wool, cabot and sons and starter/C9 brand socks.Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!
