I saw that Yahoo story too.... Actually, in the comments section below the story, some of those folks had alot of home-formulas too. Kinda reminded me of the forums here!

I used home made detergent for quite a while, then I realized that even with bleach, my whites were getting dingy. So, as long as I can, I will be using regular detergent. I just bought 200 loads worth at Sams for $13 - it averages out to 6.5 cents a load.

Making the home made detergent tonight for the first time. If I can get 180 loads for less than $10, I am on it.

The Borax was $3.50 at Target
The Fels Naptha was 1.19 at Publix
Arm and Hammer washing soda was $2.50 at Publix
        5 gallon bucket Free.

Lets see if this stuff works.

I have been making my own detergent for at least three years now and it has worked great for us and the savings is quite significant. Quite awhile back I posted the recipe that I use. I will try to find it and post a link to the thread.

So far my whites have stayed white with no problems, however, I have heard other ladies complain about their whites looking dingy and they finally stopped using the homemade detergent. I also use Oxyclean and Clorox Color bleach, so I am not sure if that makes a difference. My daughter attends a private school and they wear white polos every day so I really need to keep my whites white if you know what I mean.

          Have fun with it!

I've got a front loader HE washer. Any recipes for this or are they the same, just use less?

So, I let mine sit 24+hours to settle and now its all clumpy. Is that what is supposed to happen? And if so, how do you break up these clumps....its like a jello but with bigger chunks.

I just used a big whisk. Once you get it broken up, you can transfer it to smaller bottles and just shake the snot out of it before using.

Since I make a double batch, I have mine in a 22 qt. bucket with a lid that sits in front of my wash machine. When doing laundry, I just use a 1/2 c. measuring cup to scoop it out and put it in the wash machine. My machine has a dispenser but I just pour it in over the clothes with anything else I want to add and turn it on. If it is too thick, then I just stir it up.

With a wife and 2 small kids, we also do at least one load a day.

And SUCCESS!!! We now have six 5 gallon buckets of detergent for less than $20. Love living smart!

Next up, dishwasher detergent and then soap

We did our own batch for once and it came out great. Gave a few bottles to a few friends to try out and it worked great. Used a recipe that was like the one on another thread that a friend uses. Way cool. Walmart had all three items next to each other in our store. Next GF wants to try making butter.
