  • Please disagree with me!

Okay, after the bit of foofra from Becky, I want to chime in and ask all of you to do me a favor. Please disagree with me! I don't know it all. I know that's hard for some of you to believe, <G> but it's the truth. If I come on here and make statements like, "Ya'll don't know nothing! I made a 5000 yard shot with my whizbang gizmogun" I hope someone out there will challenge me on that. The point here is that if your experience is different than mine, I want to hear about it. Different equipment/methods work differently in different situations! I know that's a surprise to everyone too...<G> If you disagree, tell me about it! I'm not going to flame you. I may point out that my experience was valid for me, but I'll probably also acknowledge that your experience was equally valid for you. I can't know that someone else had a different experience if you don't tell me about it.

Tell me what works, what don't, and hopefully, why in both cases. I want to learn this stuff, which is why I'm here. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to impress anyone with my great outdoorsman skills, because frankly, I don't have many, but I have a few, and I'm willing to share. I sincerely hope you are too. :)

having and open mind,, with open ears( eyes in this case) and the ability to learn from others will go a long way to becoming better prepared. Those who choose to stay closedminded and refuse to change or look at new ideas and cultivate them to work for them, will be prone to failure.

      that said.

      Im never wrong.

Your grammar was wrong in the above statement. It should have read, "Tell me what works, what doesn't, and hopefully, why in both cases."

Other than that, I agree with everything you said.

sometimes people just need to get some thicker skin and not be so sensitive and remember that they can't hear tone nor see facial expressions. I have had my share of miscommunications with people on forums before but it takes real maturity to gut it out and solve the communication issue. Running away doesn't solve the problem it just moves it to another venue.

To be honest, the person in question did not like something I wrote. She essentially said I was going to let old people and children suffer. I was MAD and initially posted a blazing response. Full of sarcasm and nasty wit. After a few minutes of thinking about what I'd wrote, I modified it. It wasn't that someone disagreed with me, it was the fact that it was turned into a personal insult! Anyway, I think 1Admin deleted the entire thread cause I can't find it now.

Anyway the moral, is if you mad, don't respond right away. Think about it first and then don't get personal.

I don't think it was you MB, I think the problem was she responded that way regularly. You were "letting old people and children suffer" and I was "spoiled" because I should be using third world methods to dry food at home instead of buying a dehydrator.

I noticed that anything she posted, she either had taken offense to or had some problems with what had been said.

MB and Bearman- I wouldn't pay her not much heed. What one person who just got here and posted 7 times- all either negative or arguing; is usually a problem. Besides your posts are usually informative and educational. I didn't see much from her in the way of either....

Thick skin is something that is needed and warranted for what may be on the horizon. Bad guys prey on the weak.... the strong survive.

I like it when people disagree with me. Due to the fact that that may mean I have over looked something and they have noticed it. ;)

now when i get one of those .177 super barrett single shots, and transer over my scope that came with the marlin 60 from walmart, 5000 yards won't be nothing.

I guess the point of that was to encourage people to jump in and say something. There are a lot of things to do in prepping, and a lot of ways to do them, and there is no way one person is going to think of all of them. I have a long way to go, and I know I'm going to miss some things along the way. That's the main reason I'm here. I want to hear different opinions. That doesn't mean I'm going to blindly accept what I read, but I am going to keep an open mind. Yes, I know it's possible to drive a tent stake with a cast iron frying pan, (don't ask) but if someone else can offer a better way, I want to hear it. I haven't started dehydrating yet, but it's on the agenda, and I want to hear other people's experiences with it, both the good and the bad. Hey, we can learn as much from mistakes as we can from the successes, right? At least we know one way that doesn't work! It might save me the trouble of finding that out by myself.

On example, I got the idea of using sterno in the oven to bake with, in case the gas co. went away. So I got out the can of sterno, made sure I could read the oven thermometer, and lit it. I let it stay in there for almost three hours, and it never got above 148 degrees. Okay, I can't make bread with that, but now I know. It also left an odor in the kitchen that I would prefer wasn't there. I aired the place out the next day. It's as important to know what doesn't work as it is to find out what does work, right? Or even a way that works just a little better than the way that 'sorta' worked.

Also, even if I disagree with someone, there are ways to say that that don't start with, "Aw, you're a spit-dribbling moron! Anybody could tell that wasn't going to work!" I haven't seen that yet, although I did see what I considered to be a fairly heated response or two. So again, disagree with me, do it respectfully, and I'll do the same. Maybe we'll both learn something.

I am new to this forum, but I am often in various technical irc rooms and such. As most of us likely don't know the whole story, we can only speculate at best. Typically, flaming is not a good idea in any case. If someone was really being a pain in a forum/irc, it would be better just to have the op ban them quietly.

I must admit, I have been a bit more abrasive on other IRC's when new users come in and ask the same questions that are readily available, yet even with reminders "hey, look here first" they continue to ask the same ol questions. You can say, "Read xyz" only so many times until you have had enough.

So my recommendation to newbies is always do your diligence in researching a topic first. Exhaust the resources you have available (and the Internet has a ton, some good, some bad). Then, come back and get clarification if needed.

Now, not saying any of this applies to your situation, but just a good general rule of thumb. Also, possibly a sticky on the top of the forum (and there may be one, I forget) saying, "Read this before posting....IT COVERS THE BASICS YOU SPIT DRIPPING MORONS!!" (haha, sorry, couldn't resist)

Regarding dehydrating, I am planning that too. I have found that on Excalibur's web site, they have some great videos that I have found very encouraging:

After watching this, consider a good grain mill to grind up all those veggies and such:

Anyway, good luck, and I hope, as I am sure others feel the same way, don't run off because of a few moody responses. Also, I have a special thanks to the people who run the forum and the servers for placing this resource online and keeping it up. Many people may not know, but there is an expense for keeping these sites online and running. So thanks!
