  • Always have prepping on my mind!!

Hey guys, sorry for my absence, but school and family have had me pretty busy lately.

Wanted to share my find with you today. We have a second hand clothe store (kid clothes) that we go to all the time. Well anyway, we are on their sale list and we got a call Friday morning about the Summer Blow Out Sale. Every piece of clothes is marked down to $1. So we grabbed our laundry baskets (store's version of a shopping cart-LOL) and loaded up on clothes for our little one.

    Our score was:
21 pairs of pants (14 of them are denim)
    13 shirts
1 kid's mini skirt (wife snuck that one in there)
    3 cold weather tops
    6 dresses

Normally these would cost $278.15 +tax (reduced second hand store price).
But we paid, including taxes, $50.87!!

We put the clothes in our guest bedroom dressers. My daughter loves it. If you ask her what these clothes are for she will tell you: "Just in case."

We then hit the camping store and bought a back up stove and oven and some supplies, to include another pair of steel toed sneakers for the Mrs. I forgot how much I paid at the camping store. But here is a pic of that purchase:

Just thought I would share with my online prepping family.

    LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC!! :)

I wish my wife would have understood the value of second hand clothing. You did good bro.

Looking at your camp supplies loving the fact you have some cast iron in there. Go ahead and start using it to truly season it. After a few years of cooking in it every day it will be better than that non stick stuff. I would offer a word of caution though, that non-stick aluminum griddle won't hold up for long. Once the teflon starts to wear off the aluminum will start to leach into your food (not good).
Stand next to me and you'll never stand alone.

Thanks Tofu, unfortunately they did not have any cast iron griddles.
But I will keep my eyes open.
I want to buy more cast iron skillets. Unfortunately my wife hates cooking in them.
Post SHTF she will have to understand that her "pretty" cooking skillets wont last long over an open campfire.

I'm so with you here. When we bought our house the had to have one of those fancy glass top stoves. I love camping and cooking with cast iron, they do take some getting used to. But once you do, food just tastes better.

btw, if you're up Tennessee way Lodge Cast Iron (Cast Iron stuff made in Pittsburgh, TN) Outlet stores carry many factory seconds (nothing wrong with them, they ain't perfect). I bought my griddle from Bass Pro. I personally only buy Lodge, just because they are American made and if I take care of them its a one time investment.

              Best of luck!

                Wow, great finds Klayton!

I hope your wife will give cast iron a chance, it really is the best cookware. I almost exclusively cook with it. I have both the seasoned and the enameled and love love love it! I even have a few pans that my mother passed down to me. What does your wife not like about using the cast iron?

I forgot to add, Amazon is another great place to purchase Lodge cast iron from as you can get free shipping on most items and pretty good prices. I would say most of my cast iron was purchased via Amazon. Although recently, Fred Meyer had a 2 for 1 deal. Purchase one Lodge pan and get a second of equal or lesser value for free. I was all over that deal.

                    Thanks all!

@SCinPNW: she hates that she has to use an oven mitt/hot pad to pick up the handle... I guess if you didn't grow up with cast iron you learn the hard way that the handle is ALWAYS hot... But again, her plastic handles won't last in Post SHTF...
