  • Snaring 101

Lets make a snare. The snare today wil be a surelock snare. first thing you want to do is put your cable through the lock. The cable we are using is 5/64 7x7 this cable is good for almost every animal in the US. The lock is sized for 3/32 which is not a problem it will actually be faster this way.

now you put a aluminum stop on the end sticking through the lock. you can use a swager but you dont need one. you can hammer on the stop with a hammer against a chunk of iron/anvil. if you dont want to use aluminum stops you can get some small nuts and anneal them and use those.

put a bend in your cable behind the lock where you just hammered your stop on this makes the snare function more smoothly. you can bend it with your fingers or pliers.

now go to the other end of your cable and slip on your tubing piece. this is what they call a whammy and we will get to the importance of that towards the end. the tubing has a hole size of approximatley 3/32. i get it from the automatic syringe guns from feedlots for free or you could find small tubing like this for next to nothing from an auto parts store.

now for your double ferrule. again you could use an annealed nut for this. hammer it down just enough to pinch the cable you dont need to hammer it flat because that will break the aluminum.

    here is your finished snare

here is why your whammy is important. some of the snare setting on the internet makes me cringe. buy a roll of #9 wire and cut into 32 inch sections. these sections can then be bent in half and stored easily. when you want to set a snare you push the section into the ground and manuever it centered over the trail. we will pretend the dark green grass is a deer/racoon trail. open you snare loop if your targeting racoon size animals approx the size of you open hand. place your tubing on the number 9 wire and get your snare centered on the trail and have the bottom of the snare approx 4 inches off the ground.

should look something like this. secure the end of the snare to something that wont move and get your skinning knife ready.

If you cant get the #9 wire into the ground you can wrap it around a tree or post next to a trail and use it in the exact same way.

Excellent Thread!!! Very nice! Bravo bravo!

I'm gonna guess Colorado. I figure California you probably can't trap, and I haven't seen that nice of grass any time I've been in AZ.

              Your close very close

Im not much on lost in the woods with nothing type trapping but will be making posts on equipment you should have and how to use that trapping equipment for a long term situation. that lock and 5/64 cable will hold a deer.

the #9 wire allows you to support your snare and put it on LOCATION which is the most important part of trapping/snaring. like this heavy game trail without a tree in sight.
