As long as you're using a USB stick......

I would also include scanned copies of:
    1. Medical records, including office notes, lab results, EKGs, radiology studies (MRI, CT, Ultrasound), hospital admission H&P (history & physical), hospital discharge summaries, immunization records.
    2. Licenses - Marriage, divorce, adoption, professional
    3. Diplomas - college, professional, trade
    4. Insurance - health, auto, life, disability, home
    5. Financial (account numbers) - bank, credit union, retirement, savings, brokerage.
    6. Ownership Deeds - auto, home, boat
    7. House Inventory - appliances (receipts and pictures), "big-ticket" items (receipts and pictures), pictures of exterior and interior of house
    8. Specials - firearms (pictures of with serial number), jewelry (receipts)

WHY you say??? What if it's more than a house fire?? What about a railcar explosion, a pipeline explosion, a tornado, a hurricane?? What if you can't get back to your neighborhood for 1 month??

I can at least show my professional license and college degree to gain employment (even if temporarily). If I end up in the Emergency Department, I can at least show the doc my old EKG thereby saving me an expensive cardiac workup "just to be safe." I can at least "show" the claims adjuster what my house "used" to look like.

EXPAND your threat arena to LOWER your threat impact.

BTW - my medical info is stored on a SD chip in my wallet and is NOT password protected (not much good if I'm unconscious.....) Yes, I understand the increased risk of medical privacy being breached but am more concerned with an "interesting" medical history.

I keep almost all of the above on several USB sticks, some of them with family. The ones not on my person I use PGP to creat self-extracting archives with family knowing the passwords to ones they would need access to in an emergency.

The one I carry with me DAILY on my keychain is The Iron Key. Yes, they are expensive, but a great working device, as they have the data encrypted using an ONBOARD chip, not software implementations. It is also well designed with good menus and a return if lost feature. It is also fully waterproof with the electronics sealed in epoxy. If someone tries to access it one too many times with the wrong passphrase, it "self-destructs" and cannot be accessed or salvaged after that. Very nice device... Well worth the $$$.

I'm a little behind on this but with alot of life changes going on such as kids growing up, purchases, moving etc. I spent several hours yesterday and this morning gathering, scanning and photographing items to a USB. One copy will go in the storm shelter, in an airtight ammo can, and one copy will go "off site".
This isnt a DOOMSDAY prep but a REAL LIFE prep and while not as coolio as new gear it got me bigger kudos from the wife for my work!

Good thread. Have changed my lifestyle over last few years so my finanicals are very basic. I have all important docs in several places, including my BOBs. I do have a couple of the sticks with info, but I have a lot on paper. All in sleves and then inside vac'd bags. Used my fod vac.

I think one should have a good bit on paper with them too. What if power is a thing of the past? The sticks will be worthless. If things come back great. There is thoughts that a bad solar flare could put us out of power for years. Think I want paper backup too, just saying.....

I have all my stuff on paper and stored in a location but how much use or need will there be in your senario for them? Your not the first one who has said that so help me out on understanding why I would need those documents if we get a reset that hard and have no power because I cant see it from my viewpoint so I gotta be missing something.
I kinda did mine for the reasons they listed above like fire, tornandos, a chem spill or reason that would keep me away from my place. It also allowed my son to figure out that his vehicle insurance card had expired and he had not received his new one. I had done it many years ago and still had the old stuff but like i said the life changes wowed me as i started re-doing it.
                  Thanks for this thread.

Hey Matt, the reasons you list are great and very important. That's why I have some sticks too, for the short term.

Not sure how much life experince (your age) you have. I'm 58 next month. Two marriages, 3 kids, 8 grandkids, lung cancer which resulted in loss of my left lung. Been through every 'cane since Besty in '65, Camille, Bob, Fredrick, Elana and Katrina. Worked with power company for nearly 30 yrs, traveling to ice storms, tornados and hurricane ravaged areas.

I've seen a lot of SHTF.

What my point to keep documents for is at some point things will try to come back, power or no power. May take a while, but we humans can't help it. We try to move forward. If there is no power and some sort of civilazation tries to come back, having those docs may make it easier to get you going again. Thats the only point I was trying to make. A small amount of paper may make a big difference, thats all. JMO
