  • Suggestion for a new sub forum

I don't know about most of you, but I think it would be very helpful to have a dedicated sub forum for reviews of different survival type gear. Not just the - this is the best buy it, but more like "I bought a "wigit" and it was (good, bad, ugly, not great, better than expected), here are the pros and cons.

For newbies like me, it would be awesome to be able to learn about specific products based on real user experiences AND have the reviews concentrated in a specific location.

    Whatcha think?

    The idea does have merit.
Having a stand alone sub-forum with other posters that doesn't sale that product so you're not getting a sales pitch is nice.
Just hands on practical experience where the forum is not cluttered with non-review posts might save time and a headache.

we already have a gear forum. feel free to ad any reviews of gear you used there.
Lots of reviews in it already as well as discussions on certain gear areas,
Ask a question about a specific piece of equipment, im sure its been used by someone here and they will try and help. If not they will more than likely point you in the right direction ( due to past experiences etc_)
if there is a need for a sub forum, im sure it will be made( supply vs demand)

There shouldn't be any sales pitch from anyone here. There are only a few sponsors who can, but so far have not.
If you have a worry that it is a sales pitch report the post to the mods and admin. We'll deal with it.

Does gear include things like wheat grinders, solar ovens, etc? I was thinking it might cover items from all of the catagories. Except maybe guns - those are pretty personal and often customized.

I thought it might be easier for newbies (like me!) to read and understand why certain things - while cheap, may not be the best use of your money. You know, learn from others mistakes! :D

Maybe individual threads labeled "grain mills", "solar ovens", "water purification systems" and have individual reviews on items in that catagory (so as not to make it too cluttered).

Of course, you are right - that might be like putting out spammer bait.....

"Gear" encompasses much more than tactical nylon.

No one is gonna blast you here if you post a "need a recommendation on grain mills" in the wrong forum. It might get moved to the appropriate forum, but that's it.

Cim- Where do you think you are seeing a "sales pitch?" The only thing that remotely has anything to do with selling is the "group buys" forum wherein the sponsor- you know the guy that pays for the site- from time to time offers sales, closeouts and deals. It's in it's own forum for a reason.

In the time we have had this forum up, I've watched two forums- GlockTalk and Arfcom increase the amount of advertising they allow on their site. When you read a post on either forum, a huge ad either on the side or the bottom of the screen now pops up. This in addition to the normal dozen or so ads they each have at the top, bottom and sides of each page.

We don't have that here. However it's unrealistic to think that the costs of a forum can be covered simply with donations. I made the mistake of counting on others for help in 98 and 99 when I got $15K in the hole paying for my own shortwave airtime so I could give out free prep and survival information on shortwave. Just like today, only a small handful of people stepped up to the plate to help. My family suffered for that.

And that my friends, is why we have a sponsor here.

Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

I think someone else mentioned a "sales pitch". I just thought it might attract spammers who wanted free advertising. Please, don't think I was criticizing your site, I really appreciate it. Sponsors don't bother me at all, in fact (correct me if I am wrong), I assumed that those sites were approved by this forum.

I think you offer a great resource to people like me, who are woefully ignorant and trying to improve their current situation. Thank you so much.

I should have explained my self better.

With a sub-forum there is a chance it would attract sales man, like in that's where they would head when first posting here with spam.
I don't get the feeling this site 'pushes' anything.
Sorry for the muddy water :o.

Highly recommend that you do a couple (2 - 3) of searches before posting...most likely you will find a review. Like 1Admin & protus have said ask your question.

IMO - no need for another sub forum.

If you do have a review you can also post a blog article. I have posted at least 1 review under the gear forum for a flash light.
