LOL! I got an image in my mind, after reading all of the above, of a group of hillbillies "scoping out" a bunch of "wannabees" from the city trying to set up a camp in the woods. The hillbillies have been looking for the reason one of their hogs came up missing. The conversations would probably go like this:

"Well, I do declare! That fella thar has one of them big tall trucks will big tires all the way 'round on the ground. I betcha that thar thang could climb a tree backards! Ever dang tire has some go behind it! If I had that thang I could put out hay all winter and never get stuck. He's mine, not yoren!"

And: "Hey! Looka thar! That other fella has one of the new-fangled black shoot-guns with a clip dropping down almost all the way to the ground! That's one of them thangs you can load on Sunday and shoot all week! Always wanted me one of them. He be belonging to me! The rest of ya'll leave him be!"

And: "Well shut my mouth! That one fella has on some of them clothes that makes ya invisible in the woods! If he hatna moved, I never would have seed him. If I had them camies I could sneak up on a wild turkey and grab it by the leg! I could sneak over to Lula Bell's house and her daddy would never me a'coming! Now fellas, I want them clothes. He's mine!"

And it could go on and one, for just about every item that wannabees stock up on! Anybody planning on hitting the woods in these parts should plan on approaching a house in daylight, hailing the house, being friendly and not menacing, being polite and not pushy, ASKING for something instead of planning on stealing or poaching it, asking for permission to camp for the night in the vicinity, leaving when you said you would, and be aware that the word would go out that strangers are in the area and everybody around there would be on high alert with itchy trigger fingers.

Sometimes a little politeness, and honesty, and saying what you do and doing what you say, can be much more beneficial to you as opposed to what a lot of these people on these boards are planning on doing. Just my thinking on the subject.

" A way of life." I have used those words myself to help encourage someone else to become more than an event prepper. JDY says it best, that we prepare based upon our needs and not whatever the "event" is that disrupts the supply of those needs.

Having said all of the above; I continually find myself "waking up" more and more as the years go by. I have come to the realization that I will never be fully prepared, materialistic wise, without unlimited financial resources.

I am not a member of any MAG or other group. My community starts with my family, then to the neighbors, and branches out from there. However; I have people that live over 20 miles away that are more my neighbors, than the people whose land actually joins mine.

And just because I don't have "x" number of super pails, doesn't mean my basement isn't full of quart jars that we have canned.

I'm not even gonna touch the Hillbilly comment. With my accent, every time I leave TN, evrbody looks down to see if I'm barefooted with no shoes on :p
Welcome to Tennessee, patriot state of shootin' stuff.

The way I see it is that the first wave of casualties (in a long term event) will be the gazaillions in the cities that sit down and wait for somebody else to help them, then Matt's wannabees will be the next wave. Then the next wave consisting of people that have thoughtfully prepared. When it is all over, only a sprinkling of true preppers will be left. I hope that me & mine and you & yours are still there.

Over here in the UK, preppers are so thin on the ground you don’t even come across many pretenders LOL

Mind you as of late we have gained quite a big ‘I’ve got silver I’ve got really money’ crowd and of course a lot of people do have these fantasies about running off into the woods and relaying on those skills they learned while watching Ray Mears programs....

What I have noticed though that bugs me, is that some people have this really weird need to belittle what others are doing, in order to justify what they’re not doing.

              You know the type of people;

''Well if you ask me growing your own food only makes you a target for looters, thats why I don't do it you see me doing it''

''Buying tinned food are you mad, there are supermarkets and warehouses full off the stuff just waiting to be looted when the time comes, oh aye it'll tie you down as well, be us that keep moving that will survive''

''Getting a gun licence eh, that’s a bad idea with the country collapsing around them the state will still have to infrastructure to meticulously gather up all weapons listed on the firearms register. You’ll be left with nothing probably put in a concentration camp too, while I’ll still have my

Triple-sod LOL. Know the types! They're rampant over here also. That's why I just keep my mouth shut, hunker down and keep on prepping. Bet you're doing the same!

I remember the guy that I learned so much from when I was young. Above all, he was HUMBLE. The guy had truly "been there and done that" on a level most of can't even fathom.

Our first meeting with him, he could have talked a bunch of smack, threw out a bunch of credentials, etc. Instead he mentioned that he was a "surveyor" during the war.

What was funny was here was a couple of teenagers and 20 something's out with this guy camping. "We" were all teaching classes on firestarting, sheltermaking and outdoor survival type stuff.

Mid day the first day a buddy of mine comes to me and goes "Hey man, I think this guy knows more than what he's letting on."

I'm like "You flipping think!!" LOL

He never was like "oh you kids are dumbbutts, you should do it this way." He would say stuff like "well you can also do it this way" and show a better way.

The most humble guy I've ever met proved to be the smartest and most experienced!

                    Something to consider...
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

*1Adman..... I was in the army with an old Master Sergeant that had been through WWII and Korea. He was one of the best sergeants I ever had. He had the calm demeanor of experience and confidence. When he told you to do something, you wanted to do it quickly because you knew that he knew his business and he was trying to keep you alive. If you jumped when he said "frog," you knew you had a better chance. I wish I knew what became of that guy. If the S ever HTF, I'd give anything to have him around. Now, with him, I'd share my preps to just have him there for his input. One in a million!

I keep prepping, and sometimes I consider that I may never be the one to use the preps.
By that I mean, I will put preps away, because it is good to do, and I may die in the first battle, but I pray the Lord will lead the ones He wants to to those preps.
I prep for more than those close to me, although my brother also preps, because a larger group has greater survivability, and there are others who would doubtless become a part.
I have bought more shovels, picks, tarps, rope, and a whole lot of other tools because when it hits, I expect there will be those who will need to use them. I would rather have tools than cash.
OTOH, knowledge will go a long ways, because with knowledge we can recreate tools.
I study Primitive living skills so that when all else fails I will have that knowledge and be able to start over.

This is also in the fore-front of my mind. I also feel I won't be around to use my meager preps. But I make sure to let my uninvolved family know where, how, and why to use them. I feel I won't be around due to my family history and their historical lifespan.

As would I tools over comparable value silver and gold... With inflation coming on strong, good tools are going to cost MORE in the future... Rather buy quality NOW than buy junk later as no one would be selling their good stuff... I think I have done well in this area so far... Nothing like starting a project and you do not have to run to the hardware store at all because you have everything you need already on site...

                                Yeah ...

I'm convinced that there are SO many modes, skills, and aspects ... "elements", to prepping, that NObody will EVER cover anywhere NEAR "all" the bases.

Not to mention how MANY things can go wrong, and in how many ways !

Heck, I'm 52 and have lived a wilder and fuller life than any other 4 people I know (but I do know OF others, who have me "way beat"). Even trying to "save" this sorry, tattered old hyde is almost a joke !

But, in terms of the youngsters, the noobs, and the community, at large ? ... Worth it.

And, like I said, ... I believe that YHVH designed the set ... He wrote (writes) the script ... Much like the animator in the Porky Pig cartoons ... He sees all ... knows all ... has every hair on your head numbered ...

And, while popular proverb would state that God helps those who help themselves ? .... I can tell you that if God favors YOU ? ... Your providence and your security are assured ... or ... at the very least, he will whisk you to his embrace without any sting-of-death.

On the other hand .... If God is against You ? ... Or if you are not walking in/with God ? ... You can buy a battle-tank and a concrete bunker and hire an army and load two warehouses full of Gourmet MREs ... Ain't gonna help yer poor sorry arse ... You'll prolly fall into your guilded potty and drown !

Nontheless ... To want to survive and to help others thru harsh conditions is a great compliment to God, and The Human Condition ... And it is Challenging and engaging (and often fun!) to ponder and analyse all the variables, and to fantasize (yes! to fantasize) and to practice and to play with all the toys and compare BOBs.

Heck ... My goal, with all this "stuff" is to have fun NOW !! ... To plan my gear and procedures and to see what works and what does not ... And to meet homeless folks and pick THEIR brains and give THEM a hand (costs little) ... AND ... to go camping, with my expedition pack, and to see just how long I can "stay out there", before I come crying home to my soft bed !

Of course, if something goes really wrong, then, yes ... It just *might* be the case that my suffering, my discomfort, and the intensity of any threat ... MIGHT ... be mitigated, by my preps.

Or ... my guitar might fall off the wall and hit me on the head and kill me ... Stay tuned ! (pun intended).

Count your blessings ... have a ball ! ... Help others ... Give sincere thanks.

                                =

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
