I am one who advocates for a "survivalist community," for lack of better words... But I am NOT socialist... I see it as more TRIBAL, I guess... The word I use for my ideas is a "Covenenant Community," although that term has been abused by some in the past (Bo Gritz & Almost Heaven). A place where like-minded people WILLINGLY CHOSE to establish a "community (some may call it a COMPOUND)" where certain "community essentials" BURDENS are mutally beared, such as security, safety, infrastructure advancement (wells, wastewater, communications, etc...), and are then left to "live and let live" in liberty to make their individual homesteads into whatever floats their boat...

Basically, if what I think is coming truly does come, I truly, sincerely believe that LONE WOLVES and ISOLATED survivalists will NOT last long, and eventually will die off due to INJURY, CONFLICT or slowly letting essential tasks and duties go UNDONE due to the huge labor burden upon them in such a NEW WORLD... No one will be able to HIDE from the GOLDEN HOARD as JWR puts it... Very few are that far out in the boonies...

I base my "Covenant Community" ideas upon many historical examples, the most profound being the 12 Tribes of Israel, the EXODUS out of Egypt, and their "community" and "judical" structure, as well as the early congregations who believed in the Messiah in the Book of Acts... Speaking of the examples in the Book of Acts, what would one call the "SYSTEM" those Disciples and Believers (many who walked and lived with Y'shua/Jesus face to face) created after the Resurrection and giving of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit)? I wouldn't call it socialism, but it is very different from the systems many "Christian" survivalists profess to want to create. One of those "not applicable to me" parts of Scripture I guess...

So over the years, I have had to think and ponder, and to deeply SOUL SEARCH my heart and spirit when it comes to my FLESH NATURE desire to be a LONE WOLF and build my own little "survivalist compound" where only my family and I ride out the woes soon to befall the world... Because I assure you, I am VERY INDIVIDUALISTIC, and LIBERTY-oriented, and it has required me to RE-THINK things using eyes of the Spirit (The capital "S" one, from our Maker) and also eyes of REALITY (lone wolves die alone), as well as begin to TRUST (but VERIFY, to weed out the people mentioned here earlier) and to resist PRIDE...

So I truly believe that only well-established GROUPS will ride out what is to come in "relative comfort" and not cross the finish line looking like a released prisoner of a concentration camp or wiped out by a surprise attack of starving gangs, having women raped, and suffering a miserable death...

Although I do not have such a group yet, I PREPARE as a if I will end out to be a LONE WOLF with family, but also PREPARE to be a HUGE BENEFIT to a group if one were to materialize, with a wide variety of "accoutrement," and I am not talking just battle rattle with full mags. Since I do not have the LAND for such a group community, my PREPS have always been geared to be a WINDFALL of benefit to a group that does have land and natural resopurces... But it will also allow me to BUG IN somewhat well too if such a group never materializes... Which is also why I am working hard on HEALTH and CONDITIONING and WEIGHTLOSS... the one aspect of SURVIVAL I am weak on, and I admit it...

So I encourage all here to NOT give up on a "community" type scenario... I believe it CAN be done without turning into socialism or a CULT...

groups and community can be had. I dont think folks are saying it cant. However, people need to wakeup and know that a real group will interact on more than one level ,continually over time. Be it training days, work days, or meetings. Going to the local java joint to suck down a mochagaychino while talking about JWR's last book and how you wish you were like him with 5 others is not a group. So many new people are grasping for that "community" or tribe effect , but they dont want to put out the effort to be viable. Plus it takes time, real groups just dont let folks in,it takes weeks, months and even years. Time seems to be the one factor that many seem to ignore...

Agreed, and since we all are so spread out all over this HUGE country, I prepare for survival in my "wolf pack" here in west-central VA yet HOPE an opportunity opens up with others in ONE location... But I'm not holding my breath... The biggest hurdle by far is the lack of VIABLE LAND... No one I have met, nor heard about, has enough land (viable/fertile/resources) to support such a "community..."

I have seen lots of "I've got 50/100 acres here in [whatever place, USA]" but so far always the land is not viable for sustained living without outside resources and provisions and would be a failure or miserable existence if tried there... There is one I know who is doing it on a "group community" level in TN but I am concerned it is too "one leader" focused with too much control in one man's hands, which leaves some big concerns...

TIME! The one variable that keeps clicking away, non-stop... Time is one of the primary reasons I believe I will ride what comes with just my immediate family, in our rural part of VA, with neighbors that are GOOD people but not the type I would CHOOSE to "covenant" with...

TIME before things get REAL HARD is SHORT, I believe, so as the storm clouds get closer, the less likely ANYONE will be able to ideally sell what they have (get $$$ in hand) and move everything somewhere... Moreover, it is even getting to the point that TIME to establish a community is now getting less and less likely, as crops just don't pop out of the ground by themselves, orchards don't bear fruit year one, security doesn't just materialize, and "community and trust" don't just happen at first meeting... It may already be TOO LATE for my IDEAL dream... Time to make the best with what I have, and pray for miraculous protection and provision as needs arise...

And as Matt has originally posted, finding the REAL DEAL survivalists is not an easy task since we all like to keep low-key and HIDDEN amongst the masses... I have not found a handful in my area, which is sad and concerning... I even look for little HINTS, like what is on their key chains or belts, the type of vehicles they drive, how they dress, the shoes they wear, the comments they make on world events, etc... Now there are PLENTY of gun guys, some with a SURVIVE the gun battle metality, with battle rattle, FAIK, and even a BOB, but I don't see a long-term SURVIVAL from them yet... But the lack there of is not that surprising, for this is VA after all... But I continue on, hoping TIME is on my side, rather than against...

Rmpl- yes I know exactly what your talking about.

What your describing is what I've always felt was the correct "way" to do it. With people who ALREADY are preparing, ALREADY see the problems and are taking ACTION, etc.

That was NOT what these libtard clowns were advocating. It was the classic, "I'll organize my subdivision AFTER the fact" type non sense.

And like I mentioned, their are some folks that advocate this sort of thing that WOULD be beneficial to their community, like Rmpl. And then their are some that really their only TRUE reasoning for "participating" in that sort of arrangement would be to LEECH OFF OF OTHERS. As that person mentioned clearly intended with the "cruising the neighborhood looking for who had solar panels" and "we'll negotiate our way in" ideas.

People WILL show their true hands, you just have to have some discernment to see it sometimes. :)

I've enjoyed reading your comments..makes me feel normal again.
Tried getting the storing mentality to one church friend( I thought) and she bought 5 buckets....well, that didn't go anywhere...like most of the posters here...I feel it's not worth it---I gave up months ago trying to promote saving food and supplies for whatever as a prudent thing to do...

Yeah, I have seen those TYPE of people on gun forums... In the same group as the "I'm coming to YOUR place" people...

Sorta why I believe SECURITY and INJURY will be the biggest concerns during a serious down turn as things let loose and people lose their civility and lawful behavior... Even from the "country folks" that live around me as neighbors...

Right now, I give HUGE LEEWAY to new people I meet that turn out to be "preparedness-minded," but my ears perk up when I hear the word "survival" or "survivalist" mentioned... Like Protus said in a rant long past about those terms... To the "preppies" I give the best advice I can, but MY CARDS are held tight to the chest. Just like the urban hoodlums who DEMAND respect, but RESPECT is EARNED, not given. So too, new Preppers must EARN respect by proving they are who they say they are... even if they are NOT PERFECT in doing it. Lord knows I have fallen short of my own ideals a time or two (or more...) In the same way, I too must earn respect from others more advanced than I, and often that can be STARTED by LISTENING and learning, rather than talking, bragging, or prolifically posting in various forums...

So Matt's rant is a good expression of the frustration we all experience at times...

Wish you were Matt in Washington : ) I grew up on a farm in N.MN., so in the back of my head was always "food for 30 days in case you get snowed in" even when living in CA. didn't do much, if anything while single, once my oldest was born, realized 'it's not just me anymore'... so at least the mind set was there. Have a long way to go to be where I want to be (self sufficient = survivalist in my book) and I know it, which is why I'm out here even if I never post. So much more out than this little farm girl knows... Many thanks to all of you...

OK then, I would call myself a prepper and not a survivalist.

I have a BOB and a BOL, food and water for my family for a year or so and ways to cook it (yes there are 5 gal buckets and 55 gal drums self packed), I have medical training and gear, weapons and ammo to defend my family, I have friends that I expect to see when SHTF, I have no debt save mortgage, I have plans and a place to grow crops (not a garden but crops), I have most personal items needed to last a long time.

I DO NOT have a BOV, ham radio and gear, the ability to fight the golden hoard and enough left over to resist an invasion, produce my own power, make my own clothes, live in a remote area or compound, solar panels to recharge batteries, a radiation shelter.

Being a survivalist is a way of life and takes time to achieve. Is this the difference? If I stay at this level of preparedness how do I address myself on these forums? I get you when you say you don't like posers, I feel the same way. Two years ago I had nothing but now I have a chance. I might get there some day and if I do I want to thank you all for the help I have received from you. Call me what you want, I say if SHTF I'll come to your place, but only if you help me carry all my food. LOL

Also thanks to the administrators for running this forum, I've learned a lot.

I'm more of a reader than lurker, and I'm putting as much effort as I can in adapting to my new way of life.
I've talk around the edges of "prepping" with neighbors and friends but mostly I get the "oh your one of those people" response.
I'm exercising (lost lbs) and doing what training I can, not just physical but map reading foxfire books and trying a small garden this year. My fear is I may be too late to get where I need to be in preparedness.
So thank you all for tolerating an FNG like me.

LOL! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one thoroughly disgusted with "wannabes." I was called a "Jackwagon" from one guy! LOL He was planning on leading a convoy from NJ to Iowa, with his trusty bb gun and crossbow for security! I just told him not to expect to mooch off me along the way! He didn't appreciate that! Ha! I keep my mouth shut around people, I don't care if they're prepared or not. Their lack of preparation is not my problem. I'm not as prepared as a lot of people, but better prepared than most. My clan can hold out for some time, but not forever.

I finally came to the conclusion that it's impossible to prepare for everything that could happen. I just keep my mouth shut, hunker down, add to my preps every week, and identify which of the people I know might have something to contribute to an extended effort to stay alive and provide for the family. Most of my neighbors are cattle people with acreage, gardens, orchards, wells, generators, basements, cellars, lasting springs on their land, fishing ponds, plentiful game on our lands, lots of "protection" and supplies, and all of us don't much like strangers.

What sets me off on a rant is to read where someone advises others to "scout" their surroundings to "identify" where the cattle, or any live stock is, and count that as a "resource.!" Like us hillbillies are going to share everything we worked for for years with some dipstick wandering in on us. Or, we're going to sit on our thumbs while they poach our cattle, game, fish, or whatever. I don't think that is a viable plan! LOL

LOL @ slingshot! Real hillbillies aren't people to mess with... I can't imagine any that don't have guns and are well aquainted with their use!

I think a lot of people, particularly from up north, just assume we are all stupid. I used to get terribly offended over the Buggs Bunny hillbilly cartoons, then I arrested an ol' boy whose mug shot looked EXACTLY like the red headed hillbilly from BB! it shocks me how many "preppers" have this mindset as they call it to survive......

It's good to recon your AO, to look for spots to lay up, hide, plan routes etc. It's different if your going right into "scavanger" mode, even before an event. Have i seen a small pasture with goats/sheep and said...
" ya know protus ole boy, if we were bugging out on foot, and it was rough..i may need to barter for one of those....."

however scouting your AO and going

" yip there's a 78 bronco ..i heard its emp proof....oh look....solar panels could recharge my iphone with hose...a corn field..i could make pop corn.......and a lone farm house on a dirt road....withone old truck in front and some 90 yr old lady trimming her roses....my group of buddys from the web could ask her to work as security in return for the use of her house......."
