  • Shop owner mindset !!

Over the past weekend the DW and I were out of town at a Rod Run, well about 6 pm the storms blew thru knocking out the power everywhere in our local world. This event happened at the popular suppertime needless to say most of the population was running around waving different styles of plastic trying to get food, with the power out this did not translate into a very heavy calorie load. Well I said,I carry cash in a mutiple of smaller denominations ,lets go over to this little donut shop and get a couple of donuts a carton of milk and a bottle of water and go to the room and snack and watch the weather show...We get to the shop and the owner has a Dutch door with the top open the bottom half of the door closed. I approach and say "I would like a couple of Apple fritters and a carton of milk and one bottled water." He replies " Cant sell anything cause the powers out" I tell him " I have cash and in small bills." Ok he says and walks over to the the counter thinks for a moment and tells us " That will be $4.40." Allright this will not be to hard ,so i hand him a $5.oo bill he takes it then says "Oh I'm sorry I cannot make change. Thats ok, Keep the change. He then hands me back my money and says "I cannot ring it up and I would not have a record of the sale, sorry.....All I could do was look at him and wonder ???????????? We went back to our room I pulled out my GHB, Fired up my Sevea 123 back pack stove and scooped some semi frozen speggetti into a small pan warmed it up and ate our meal and watched the show anyhow. It seems that most people do not have the ability to quickly adapt ! Even with cash seems there will be difficulity in buying items without orders or authorization from higher up to accept FRNs without electricity....So for a point of discussion If sheeple shop and store owners will not take cash how well will some of us do trying to buy with Silver or gold?

ssonb: Was it the owner of the donut shop or the clerk? While in HS and college I spent many years working for KFC. Not the most glamourous job, but the owners of the franchise were good to me. While working there I did get to know many lazy teens and less than intelligent adults that would wouldn't take your money because they didn't want to go to the hassle of creating a hand written receipt or didn't know how.

At the same time, there are many shop owners that make money despite their business savy. Like the bicycle repair shop owner who thinks because I have a garage full of bikes I must be profitable. I agree the silver and gold is going to be a problem, but its a long term investment. No matter what happens once the society settles down and order takes hold, gold and silver will always have value. Not so much during the actual emergency.

Wow a realistic view of metals! Finally
It will take an amount a time for it to level out to a point where barter for anything will happen UNLESS you are very top heavy and pay them very inflated prices. This is always the case in places that fall apart from economic, weather or war reasons. I'm speaking from experience not just reading, though reading will lead you to the same conclusion. Folks always think if they have a gold coin in their pocket they can do anything including getting a plane back to CONUS, Bravo Sierra! No one knows what that coin was worth yesterday much less on THE DAY except folks of this crowd and guess what when it hits, we aint gonna give up much to start with.
On the plus side aint it awesome to have the stuff you needed to transition rapidly!!!

Imagine, if you would, going in to a supermarket and trying to buy food when the power goes out. First of all everything you buy must be scanned because items are not priced they are bar coded.

I know that during recent hurricanes supermarkets had to have generators in order to process purchases and required cash because of the lack of internet connections to banks. Everything is difficult because of the lack of redundancy.

Hospitals are required to have a back up system in case of computer failure. However, you'd be amazed at how many healthcare workers do not know how to implement it. While training is required, it's only once a year and lack luster at best. So, workers do not remember exactly how to do it.

It's not just food and healthcare affected, it many aspects of modern life.

Just imagine the confusion at the shop if I had tried to pay for the donuts with a silver dime that is worth about $4.50 in silver!!! I can just see the look and hear the comment "you are trying to pay for $4.40 of food with a dime???" (more food for discussion pun intended)

You know even though I run in this circle some I wouldnt remember off the top of my head what coin is worth what. I just don't deal in it, much less a sheeple.
