    The best? I have cooked with charcoal for 25 years, and over the last few years Iv'e noticed this stuff burns out way to quick? Anyone else noticing this? I don't know if they are adding junk fuel to make more money, but it's pissing me off!

    My brother does competition BBQ as a hobby. Most of the guys he competes with have quit using Kingsford due to some quality issues after the formulation change. Some people claim it actually contains cement products, but I have no idea if that is true. He actually buys a special product via mail order, but says that Royal Oak is the better mass-produced product.

      I HEAR YOU BROTHER! I used to notice that stuff would burn for a long time, now they have this coated stuff and I don't think it's that great AND I don't think it burns as hot. For the past couple years I have been a Hank Hill and gone propane, as much as I like propane I miss the charcoal flavor. My love for King Of The Hill doesn't outweigh my love for good food.

        for qucik foods i still use charcoal, most of the time i still use my fire pit, which quite honstly is a pain, i usually have to burn for 3 or 4 hours to get a bed of coal to last an hour, caught my self looking at bbq's last week, maybe with next yrs tax return i will get a smoker/bbq combo.
        nothing beats the searing taste of wood heat tho.
        heres a little tidbit of info- i have always heard to never cook over pine or cedar- because of the resins effect the food flavor-and to that i say true if you are using a flame- but when down to the coals, the resins are burned off and now you just have heat, i have cooked this way many times with no adverse taste- saw this in the north where the locals only had pine to cook with.

          Actually, I have always used Royal Oak and enjoy using it today. Yes it takes longer to light up and burn since there is no fuel additives.... but hey, It gets the job done everytime.

          Although, I must admit, I do enjoy cooking with gas, and my father invested in a eletric smoker. And some of the stuff off the smoker is damn tasty.....
