  • Schools know better than you do on what your kid should eat -- lol

A Chicago public elementary school is under fire from some students and parents for banning school lunches brought from home, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Little Village Academy, a public school on Chicago's West Side, prohibits students from bringing homemade lunches unless the child has a medical excuse, according to the newspaper. School officials say the rule is meant to encourage healthful eating, as students are forced to eat lunches served in the school cafeteria instead.

School Principal Elsa Carmona told the newspaper that she created the policy six years ago after observing students bringing "bottles of soda and flaming hot chips" from home.

"Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school," she told the newspaper. "It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It's milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception."

The rule, however, is not popular among students, many of whom opt not to eat the school lunch and instead go hungry, the newspaper reports.

"Some of the kids don't like the food they give at our school for lunch or breakfast," parent Erica Martinez told the newspaper. "So it would be a good idea if they could bring their lunch so they could at least eat something."

Now I can certainly see both sides of this, parents feeding their kids junk and schools feeding kids junk. I have yet to find a nutritiously balanced meal at a school or eat one for that matter. I think what irritates me the most is the school is sticking its nose where it doesn't belong yet again. I think there is a guy doing "Food Revolution" and taking it to congress cause school lunch programs are so horrible.

Of course. Teachers and school administrators no longer work for the parents of the children they teach. They work for the bureaucracy of government. Since they no longer work for the parents, parents are contemptible idiots and should not be allowed to raise their children. This isn't the attitude of all teachers, but it is the attitude of far too many.

That is no worse than removing 'sugary drinks' from public places. We are currently living in the "nanny" state. Great Briton has been living under these stupid rule for several decades. Rules that generally favor the most slothful and shiftless people in society.

Our School board would probable hate us then. Our oldest two are only allowed to eat at school once a week. They bring their lunch from home four days a week and only buy from school on Friday. And on Fri. two of the local eateries bring in food so they either get to eat from the local pizza place or a sandwich from Subway at school. Only my youngest eats school food and his Grandmother know most of the cafeteria workers and visits with them at school on occasion so she see's what's going on...one good thing from living in a small town.

On another note. A couple weeks after school started my 14 yr. old daughter came home and told me she got in trouble at lunch today for having a sprite. The teacher told her in was "against the law" to have soda at the middle school and she should not bring it again. I talked to the principal and secretary a few days later and they were worried that if one kid did it then they all would think it was ok. Gotta keep the herd together.

@Cimarron - The teacher lied to your kid about pop being illegal to have in school? And this teacher still has a job after lying to your kid. Did you talk to the teacher directly about this? Is this actual school policy or are they making this up as they go?

I know they are trying to get pop out of schools, the machines, but not being able to bring it in yourself is crazy. It is a very slippery slope we are treading on these days.

I don't know what sort of food they're serving in school these days as my youngest has been out for 7 years. But, I looked over his menu at times and saw nutrtiious meals like: corn dogs and peas, pizza and corn, nachos and carrots. Yummy!
I remember when I was in school. Lo, those many days ago. The aroma would waft through the school all morning of fried chicken or salisbury steak or something similar, green beans cooking with ham hocks, mashed potatoes ( real potatoes, not out of a box) and gravy, home made bread and biscuits, and made from scratch deserts. I can still smell those wonderful aromas.
I never ate that stuff. I always went to the snack line and had hot dogs or hamburgers.
My Mother cooked that kind of meal every day.
Those days are gone forever just like $0.19 a gal gas, nickle bottles of Pepsi or Winchester Model 70's for $129.95.

Get involved. Join the PTA. Attend school board meetings. Attend county coucil meetings. Let your feelings be known. Maybe its not too late.

@ elittle. It was a state school proposition that removed all of the soda machines from the elementary grade schools. I don't really know it its a hard and fast "law" or something the school practices as 'remove it and they'll forget it". They are allowed to drink soda beverages in the High School and our Middle school and HS. are only seperated by a drive way so they are'nt too sticky about it. On other occasions my daughter has had soda.
Plus, knowing the teacher, she was being **** about it, she likes to come off as an 'authority'.

Amazing that some people think that forcing kids to eat only school lunches, which almost always suck, is better for them then eating what their parents provide. Not to mention, as stated earlier, some kids are skipping lunch all together now because of this policy. So their plan is eat healthy or go without? What kind of idiot voted that person into office/position? Sounds like someone needs a good @$$ kickin'.

One last copper piece to throw into the fountain: why are we still providing BREAKFAST and lunch? OMG free loading America. You do know they do NOT cut back on their welfare entitlements when their kids are at school getting 2 of their 3 meals paid for by tax payers, you do know that right? Yet another reason wny mommy welfare is always so dang obese, she gets most of the food for herself.
