  • CPAP - sleep apneia

I was wondering what anybody who is using CPAP is doing for preps when SHTF - I ve been looking at a solar powered type battery charger, there is one in the Emergency Essentials catalog but it is expensive - I am going to do some research on the mouth guard applicances for a back up system.
there is surgury that you can get, but I asked my medical doctor about it and he stated that there is not much success with the procedure.

Whatever it takes, I hope you get it handled. Sleep Apnea killed my older brother in a roundabout way, via heart trouble and obesity. Apnea is nothing to cut corners on. The ability to get a restful night sleep will be paramount in a SHTF environment.

Ask for a second sleep study sitting up, my second sleep study showed almost no interruptions, and the ones I had were not complete blockages.

I plan on doing alot of sleeping in the easy chair post PAW

LOL klayton! Me too! I've got a good view from my easy chair towards the North & South. I plan on spending a lot of time kicked back "if & when!"

I too have worse apnea laying down on back, less on side, even better inclined... but it is there. Having a linebacker build with no neck doesn't help...

Besides plans to sleep on my BOB inclined in a really bad scenario, I do have some preps I use for when power goes out, camping, or bugging out with the ability to have stuff (vehicle)...

          One is this device:

This will provide almost a week (3 day for sure) of CPAP power if you have one of the small, simple, low-power CPAP units like the GoodKnight...

You can recahrge it with this:
Expensive, yes... But aren't all good prep items? Very useful and well made!

Plus, I am trying to lose weight, which is the BEST solution...

My dad uses a CPAP, I don't know what he would so without his Vader mask.

I had sleep apnea but I lost weight and it went away.

Hospitals love sleep apnea. They make a lot of money on sleep clinics. I'm not saying it's not a legitimate problem just that they would rather treat the symptoms than address the problem. IMHO

Well, I was one of those who had mild apnea even as a normal weight teen and 20-something, they just didn't call it that back then or even really treated it. We just snored loudly and occasionally went silent before another big snore... Like I said, no neck and soft throat tissue, thick tongue, etc... It got worse as I gained weight in my 30's and 40's, but then they "discovered" it and began treating it... What a day & night moment that was, that first night with a CPAP machine. The energy and vigor I regained was amazing and I can only imagine how things in my life might have been different if I had only known about Apnea when I was in my late teens and 20's and had it treated. Needless to say, I am a CPAP prophet...

But WEIGHT is indeed the biggest factor... People like me HAVE TO lose weight, to fight against our family predisposition to being LARGE (Scandinavian Viking heritage... like those "World's Strongest Men competitions) and neck & throat design issues...

I found out that I have sleep apnea as well as COPD and Asthma. I was very active and I thought healthy. I was a volunteer firefighter for 30 years and it seems that is the cause. Thanks for the good ideas to run the machine with solar and battery system.

I don't have sleep apnea but I snore too much for my wife. I went to a dentist and got a custom-made oral appliance that I can adjust, but it pulls the lower jaw forward while sleeping. It's primary use is to treat sleep apnea and supposedly frees many CPAP users. Note, this is not the one-size fits all item from an infomerical. It cost me a few grand, but I live in an expensive market. Might be worth it as a lifestykle improvement today and off-grid dependability tomorrow.
